When Fred Dean started a Hall of Fame “Pro Day” nine years ago, his goal was to improve the event annually with a high-profile list of special guests.
Mission accomplished:
A plethora of highly successful players in football have appeared at the event which provides instructions in the sport to area youngsters to a luncheon featuring scholarships for high achievers in the classroom.

Burkhalter: A no-no for RHS

David Michael Burkhalter helped Rayville High uncover some “eggs” on Easter weekend.
It just wasn’t the type that the Hornets had envisioned.
These were “goose eggs,” courtesy of a no-hitter hurled by the Ruston High School senior in a 6-0 victory at Rayville High’s diamond on Friday night.
Burkhalter, who has verbally committed to play at Tulane University, was near perfect, just as he had been back during his Ruston Dixie Baseball Association playing career.

Bulldogs halted; Techsters sweep

Louisiana Tech University’s Bulldogs will try and salvage their weekend Western Athletic Conference series today after losing 7-1 on Friday night and 3-1 in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon to the University of Texas-Arlington.
The two teams meet up in a single game today starting at 1 p.m.
Tech dropped to an overall record of 11-18 and to 1-4 in the conference race, while the Mavericks went to marks of 14-12 and 4-1, respectively.

Back to the base for Bearcats

Garrett Hipp (right), a junior on the Ruston High School squad, gets back to the base during recent action for the Bearcats. Hipp laced out three singles to help support a 7-2 victory over Bastrop this weekend. He has been one of the top contributors to an RHS team that had compiled 18 wins entering this weekend and was listed at No. 9 in the Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings.

Firing away for Cougars

Freshman lefthander Huff McIntosh starts to follow through on a pitch for Cedar Creek High School’s baseball team which went into this weekend with 14 victories and a No. 3 listing in the Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings. The Cougars defeated Arcadia 14-0 earlier this week to boost their District 2-1A record to 4-1 entering a Monday league contest at Monroe St. Frederick.

Goldsmith leads RJHS tracksters to title

Kourtni Goldsmith won two individual first places and added two more top awards for the relay events to help guide Ruston Junior High’s girls to a championship performance at the Lady Bearkittens’ annual home meet recently.

Mulkey: Finalist for national coaching award

ATLANTA, Ga. — Baylor University Head Coach and former Louisiana Tech University player and assistant coach Kim Mulkey has been announced as one of four finalists vying for the 2013 Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year Award, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced recently. Mulkey, along with University of Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw, are among former winners of the award who are on the final ballot.
They are joined by University of California coach Lindsay Gottlieb and University of Dayton coach Jim Jabir. The Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year Award will be announced during the upcoming NCAA Women’s Final Four in New Orleans.

Brooks concert to aid Tech athletics

The annual Terry Bradshaw-Kix Brooks golf tournament hosted at Choudrant’s Squire Creek Country Club is set for April 14, while a pre-tournament event featuring a Kix Brooks concert is scheduled for April 12.
All proceeds from both events will go towards Louisiana Tech University athletics’ department.
The two events will also be held in conjunction with the annual “T-Day” spring football game which is set for April 13 beginning at 1 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
