Tech media relations, Davis win awards

Honors presented in state sportswriters’ contest

Louisiana Tech’s Athletic Communications Department won seven awards – the most in the state – at the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association SID Contest which was held Sunday in Natchitoches.
The Tech Athletics Communications Department took home two first place awards, three second place awards and two third place awards for a total of seven, two more than runner-up LSU (5). McNeese State (3), Northwestern State (2), Loyola (1), Southeastern Louisiana (1) and Nicholls State (1) also took home awards in this year’s contest.

A memorial service for Charles McIntire, age 69, will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel. Charlie Mac was born on July 22, 1943 in Payette, Idaho and passed away June 30, 2013 at Christus Highland Medical Center in Shreveport following a brief illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Doyle and BurnDean Whitlock McIntire and father-in-law, Glen E. Hunt. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Hunt McIntire; daughters, Lisa M. Joyner and husband Sam of Ruston, LA; Michelle McIntire of Ruston, LA; grandchildren, Megan J.

Workers on the downtown sidewalk construction project got a little break Friday afternoon as First National Bank of Ruston fed them a hamburger and sausage lunch with chips and drinks. Manning the grill in the background were Ronnie Walker, Brandon Woodard and Russell Woodard of FNB.

One dead in UP crash

Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle fatal crash on Helmer Road west of Louisiana Highway 151 at 10:24 a.m. Sunday.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2001 Nissan Altima, driven by 46-year-old Pamela Temple of Farmerville, was traveling west on Helmer Road when it drove off the left side of the road as it entered a slight curve.
The Nissan then traveled into a drainage ditch. The Nissan was found overturned and partially submerged in water.
Troopers believe the crash happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Cox-Boniol serves as STEM panelist

Cathi Cox-Boniol, Lincoln Parish Schools ACHIEVE coordinator, returned from a trip to South Louisiana with a new perspective on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Lincoln Parish.
Last week, Cox-Boniol was invited to be a panelist on the Louisiana Public Broadcasting show Public Square, which featured a discussion on the status of STEM education in the state.

ULM student takes crown

Jaden Leach named Miss Louisiana

MONROE — University of Monroe junior Jaden Leach, 21, was crowned Miss Louisiana Saturday night at the Monroe Civic Center.
Leach, 21, a political science major, was crowned by predecessor Lauren Vizza, a former Miss Louisiana Tech.
This was Leach’s third year competing in the Miss Louisiana Pageant.
Leach sang “Can’t Let Go” during the talent portion of the competition.
She won a $10,000 scholarship and will now go on to represent the state at the Miss America Pageant in September. Her platform is Children at Risk.
Miss Capital City Lacey Sanchez was named first runner-up.
