Bulldogs open WAC baseball play at home

Now is the time that Louisiana Tech University’s baseball team would prefer to go on a winning streak.
Not that they’ll quibble with having won their last four games, but those were outside of league play.
With Western Athletic Conference starting this weekend, it would be ideal if the Bulldogs add several more victories to that streak.

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s baseball team will be back at Wilbert Ellis Park at R.W.E. Jones Field this weekend for a second straight appearance against an in-state opponent.
The Tigers (6-14) hope the results are similar to the 4-0 victory obtained against Interstate Highway 20 rival Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday night.
Grambling will have a noon doubleheader against New Orleans on Saturday, then a single against the Privateers starting at 1 p.m., on Sunday.

Leaping for Bearcat points

Ruston High School’s Devin Price, one of the top-ranked dual jumping threats in the state, readies to complete one of his high jump attempts during the annual L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Relays hosted by the Bearcats on Thursday. Price represented the Bearcats in the high jump and triple jump at the meet that featured area schools.

’Spoon: Doubling up

Techsters’ leader to also assist Liberty during season

For Teresa Weatherspoon, the 2013-2014 basketball season will be extra busy.
Not only will she enter into her sixth year as head coach of the Louisiana Tech University Lady Techsters, but she will also take on additional duties as a consultant for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
On Thursday, the professional team where “Spoon” excelled as a four-time All-Star selection and two-time league Defensive Player of the Year announced her as one of two new coaching associates.

Tech tennis team gains WAC win

SAN JOSE, Calif. — the first conference match of the season, the Louisiana Tech University tennis team held on for a 4-3 Western Athletic Conference win over Texas State on Thursday night at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
Tech (6-3) extended its winning streak to five games after notching its first conference win since 2010 when they defeated San Jose State 5-2.
The Lady Techsters came out of the gates strong, sweeping all three doubles matches and quickly grabbing singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

RGSA continues registration

Registration for the 13-18 division of the Ruston Girls Softball Association will continue through April 8.
The fee is $65 and a birth certificate is required if an interested participant has not played in the league previously.
Information is available by contacting Lori Henry (245-2433) or Cheryl Lamkin (235-5477).
All games in the league are played at the RGSA Complex located on Farmerville Street.

RHS edges Lions

Parker Begale had two singles, Cannon Brasuell a home run and winning pitcher David Burkhalter a double to highlight a 4-3 District 2-5A opening victory by Ruston High against Ouachita High in Monroe on Thursday.
The win sent the Bearcats’ overall record to 13-4 entering two more league games against the Lions this weekend. RHS will host its Interstate Highway 20 rival tonight at 6 p.m. and then go to Monroe for a 1 p.m. single game Saturday.
Garrett Hipp and Ivan Wilson., Jr., had a single each for Ruston.

Lady Cougars halt OCS, 7-6

in

Mary Terral hit a three-run home run to lead Cedar Creek High to a 7-6 District 2-1A softball win over Monroe Ouachita Christian on Thursday.
The victory improved the Lady Cougars’ overall record to 18-2 and to 5-0 in league action.
In addition to the game, the two schools combined to raise an estimated $6,000 in donations to be divided between St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and for Michaela Bennett, an OCS student who is battling cancer.

Obaze-Ford, Simmons recognized with state hoops’ coaching awards

in

Amber Obaze-Ford and Johnny Simmons are the cream of the coaching crop for Class 3A Louisiana High School Athletic Association basketball for the 2012-2013 season.
Former Louisiana Tech University Lady Techsters’ guard Obaze-Ford of state champion Rayville High School is the Coach of the Year for the girls’ division and ex-Tech men’s assistant coach Simmons of state runner-up Farmerville High School earned the honor for the boys’ division.
