Elmer Leslie Hollis , Sr

Funeral service for Elmer Leslie Hollis , Sr, age 100, of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 15, 2013 at The Ruston Church of Christ. Officiating the service will be John Simpson and Jim Davis . Interment will follow at Pines Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA.

Mr. Hollis, Sr was born April 1st, 1913 in Spearsville, LA to the late Howard W. Hollis and Bessie Arrington Hollis and passed away April 11, 2013 in Ruston, LA.
He is preceded in death by his first wife; Ella Rae Stratton Hollis and his second wife Wanda Muse Hollis.

Dr. William Y. Thompson

Visitation for Dr. William Y. Thompson, 90, of Monroe, LA, will be held between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM, Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Ruston, LA. There will be a graveside service officiated by Dr. Robert M. Lewis on Monday, April 15, 2013, at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston at 11:00 AM. Burial will be under the direction of the Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Dr. Thompson died Friday, April 12th, at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe.

Man dies in UP fire

State Fire Marshal Investigators worked the scene of a fatal fire that occurred Friday morning in the city of Farmerville, claiming the life of one of the home’s occupants.
Farmerville firefighters were dispatched to 609 Cedar Street to find a single story residence engulfed in flames. After the fire was brought under control, the body of 48 year old Michael Gilder was discovered.

Singing for Tech athletics

Country music star and Louisiana Tech University alumnus Kix Brooks packed the house at the small stage at Rabb’s Friday night as he played a concert in conjunction with the Kix Brooks/Terry Bradshaw Golf Tournament to raise money for Tech’s athletics programs.

Academic changes

DHS, Hico Elementary reconfigure for 2013-14

Education has changed a lot in recent years, and those changes can make it difficult for some schools to keep up.
Lincoln Parish Schools Superintendent Danny Bell said that for several years, Dubach High School has been struggling to provide students with all the classes they need to graduate. Simultaneously, Hico Elementary School has faced increasingly aging facilities.

4 Paws looks forward to future

Fundraising push begins for proposed shelter

The past year has been a whirlwind for those involved with 4 Paws Rescue Inc.
In May of last year, the organization was still seeking land to build a shelter, which they had been doing for approximately seven years. By July, they had secured land.
Now, they have created several concrete, partially covered pens for some of the dogs to stay in until they are adopted. The property, located at 290 Rodeo Road, also has a house, which is used as both the new 4 Paws office and the residence of the onsite caretaker.

‘Lives Lost’ display dedication makes emotional impact

Since starting their Lives Lost to Alcohol display in 2006, the North Central Alliance Partners in Prevention have had someone associated with safety and drinking driving serve as guest speaker.
Last year it was Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone. But this year, organizer Jenny Crume and Company decided on a change.

Don’t become a victim of a phone scam

This past week the Ruston Police Department released an official statement warning residents about a recent report of a Medicare phone scam that targeted a Ruston resident. According to the report, the RPD received a complaint on April 9 from an individual who received several telephone calls from a person or persons claiming to be with Medicare. The callers were said to have a foreign accent and claimed to be calling to let the intended victim know that she would be receiving a new Medicare card but also asked for bank account information.
