Tech to start J’Mar Smith vs. Arkansas

Redshirt freshman J’Mar Smith will get the start at quarterback for Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs open the 2016 football season at 3 p.m. Saturday against the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Smith will start in front of Tech No. 1 quarterback Ryan Higgins, who will not start after being arrested on charges of DWI and speeding shortly prior to the start of preseason training camp.

GSU suspends WR Williams for season opener

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University will open the 2016 football without the services of one of the top receivers in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
GSU head coach Broderick Fobbs said Monday that Chad Williams will be suspended for the season opener against Virginia University at Lynchburg after Williams was arrested on weapon and drug charges.
He was booked on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of firearm with drugs, fugitive from justice and an outstanding bench warrant and was later released on $5,000 bond.

Tech earns recognition for value, low student debt

Students at Louisiana Tech University incur less average student loan debt than students attending any other four-year institution in the State of Louisiana, according to LendEDU’s “Student Loan Debt By State By School Report 2016.”
LendEDU ranks Louisiana Tech No. 1 in the state among the four-year schools with students averaging $18,284 of debt for their college educations. Louisiana Tech also ranks No. 25 in the nation in a list of least average debt for students at public colleges and universities.

RCT to host RusTony Awards

The Ruston Community Theatre will host the 26th annual RusTony Awards from 6-7 p.m. today at the Dixie Center for the Arts.
Attendees will be entertained with a short scene from each of the previous year’s productions, including “The Foreigner,” “A Christmas Story,” “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Monday Always Leads to Murder” and “Oklahoma!”
After the awards presentation, a reception with refreshments will follow.  The RusTony event is free and open to the public. The annual meeting of the current members begins at 5:30 p.m.

Cedar Creek students gather boxes of supplies for flood victims

In just a few short days, the Cedar Creek family collected several dozen boxes of essential items to donate to South Louisiana residents affected by the historic flooding. The Middle School Student Council and National Junior Honor Society, along with Key Club and National Honor Society, sponsored the drive. Items such as Band-aids, batteries and bug spray were picked up by Rolling Hills, a nonprofit ministry working in tandem with other agencies to respond to the great need.

We’re ready for some football

After ninth months of waiting, the time has finally around for Lincoln Parish football fans as the 2016 season officially kicks off this weekend.
Area high school teams begin play on Friday night while Grambling State and Louisiana Tech universities begin their seasons on Saturday.
Ruston High School is the lone prep team playing its season opener at home as the Bearcats take on Neville in one of the longest rivalries in the state.
“It simply comes down to the fact that anytime Ruston plays Neville it’s a big game,” said RHS head coach Brad Laird.

Watering in drought conditions

Forget Porgy and Bess, the words from the song “Summertime” by George Gershwin must have actually been written for gardeners experiencing an August with unexpected rainfall. The living really has been easy.
It is such a treat to lazily linger over my morning coffee rather than rush into the yard to haul and position water hoses to administer desperately needed moisture for dying plants and trees.
