NCLAC summer break happenings

Much to the delight of students and teachers, the summer break is now upon us. Hot weather and whines of “I’m bored” will undoubtedly be here before long, so take a moment today to register your child for North Central Louisiana Arts Council’s Summer Arts Camps.
We still have spaces available at each of our camps, both five-day and one-day, but the five-day camps are almost full. Pre-registration is a requirement, as we have to adequately prepare supplies and snacks for our campers.

Hospital Auxiliary awards scholarship

Each year the Northern Louisiana Hospital Auxiliary awards a deserving Louisiana Tech University nursing school student with a scholarship for the school year. This year the Auxiliary was proud to present this award to Jacqueline Loche at its annual spring meeting. Another day, another announcement of postseason honors for Cedar Creek High School’s softball program.
A day after having four of their players included on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State squad, the Lady Cougars feature the top player and nine other representatives on the 2013 All-District 2-1A team selected by the league’s head coaches.
Maggie Davidson, a senior infielder, is the Most Valuable Player.

5A announcement set Thursday

Ruston High School and other players in Class 5A will learn if they have any representatives on the 2013 All-State baseball and softball squads to be announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Thursday.
The team will be unveiled as the last of seven classifications included in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s format for spring diamond action.

GSU’s Cowan making family name proud

GRAMBLING — Kameron Donell Cowan is continuing the tradition of the family name as a member of the Grambling State University track and field program.
And in a big way.
Cowan?
Yes, that’s a familiar name for GSU and area athletics.
His grandfather, the late Donell Cowan, was a longtime and legendary head football coach at Grambling High School.
His father and brother are graduates of GSU. His grandmother worked in the university’s accounting department.

Tech track off to good prelim start

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Louisiana Tech University got off to a hot start at the 2013 NCAA East preliminary Championships at the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro on Thursday, as two of the school’s three athletes competing advanced to the next round.
Yusuf Muhammad led off the day by running 51.92 in the men’s 400-meter hurdles to place second in his heat and No. 10 overall in the first round.
His place automatically advanced him to the quarterfinal round set for tonight.
