Edward E “Kit” Tinsley

Edward E. “Kit” Tinsley, 74, of Simsboro La, passed away on Sat May 18 following a brave effort to recover from a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10AM Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the Chapel of Owens Memorial Funeral Home in Ruston with Rev. Randy Ray officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery near Simsboro. Kit was born Dec 13, 1938 on the family property in Simsboro and lived 70 of his 74 years on the Tinsley family home site. Kit (Papa Kit to his children and grand-children) was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed and excelled at hunting, fishing and gardening.

Creek players are All-State

Softball, baseball stars named to Class 1A teams

With 20-plus wins, high power rankings and playoff appearances, it was a successful spring for the diamond teams at Cedar Creek High.
Now, there’s more glory for the Lady Cougars and Cougars.
Cedar Creek’s District 2-1A championship softball squad has shortstop Maggie Davidson and pitcher Caley Pyles on the first unit and outfielder Lilla Jimmerson and third baseman Mary Terral on the honorable mention list of the 2013 All-State Class 1A squad selected by a panel of Louisiana Sports Writers Association members.

Mr. Jeffery Davis Lumpkin

Mr. Jeffery Davis Lumpkin, 46, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Lumpkin was born March 26, 1967 in Ruston Louisiana to Dr. William “Bill” and Elizabeth Davis Lumpkin. He was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University.

RHS trio on All-Area squad

Three members of Ruston High School’s District 2-5A championship baseball squad have been selected to the 2013 All-Area team announced by the Shreveport Times.
Junior righthander David Michael Burkhalter led the Bearcats’ representatives by being named as the Pitcher of the Year.
Also honored from the RHS program were junior third baseman Cannon Brasuell and senior outfielder Ivan Wilson, Jr.
Burkhalter registered an 11-1 record, 0.83 earned run average and 117 strikeouts in 76.1 innings.

Ex-parish coach Smart dies

Winner of more than 700 games had long battle with cancer

Brian Lee “Butch” Smart was born to coach basketball.
And for 44 years, he did just that and very well, thank you.
The Summerfield High and Louisiana Tech University graduate won more than 700 games in a career that began as an assistant coach at Bastrop High School in 1968 and ended in 2012 at Highlands High in Highlands, N.C.
On Wednesday morning, at the age of 69, Smart passed away in Ruston after a long battle with cancer.
Visitation is set for 10 a.m., on Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, with funeral services to be held at 1 p.m. at the same site.

Canterbury, Smith to unite in matrimony

Keith and Jan Canterbury, of Simsboro, are pleased to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Abby Blayke Canterbury, of Simsboro, to William David Smith, of Sterlington.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Francis Clark, of Simsboro, the late John W. Clark, Medrick Canterbury, of Simsboro, and the late Richard “Buck” Canterbury. She is a 2008 graduate of Simsboro High School and is currently enrolled at the Louisiana Tech University School of Nursing.

Noles, Ra to wed in July

Barry and Nancy Noles, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Karla Florene Noles, to Shin Deok Ra, of Osan, South Korea.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Cantrell and the late Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Noles. She is a graduate of Ruston High School, Louisiana Tech University and is currently pursing a Ph.D. in Greek/New Testament at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Responsible Dumping: Household hazards collected, disposed

Some potential dangers were removed from Lincoln Parish on Saturday as the ninth annual Lincoln Parish Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day was held at the North Louisiana Exhibition Center.
Camille Mize, manager of environmental services for the City of Ruston said 135 vehicles dropped off items including batteries, old medicines, sharps, automobile fluids, tires, paints, poisons and computers.

Seat belt campaign ongoing

The Lincoln Parish Safe Communities Program has announced that it has received funding from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC). Safe Communities Coordinator Jenny Crume will use these funds to support the Click It or Ticket Campaign.
The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office is preparing to participate in the Louisiana’s annual Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign, with other law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement of the state’s occupant protection laws during the two-week mobilization currently ongoing through June 2.
