Lincoln Rotary awards scholarships

Lincoln Rotary recently handed out its 2013 scholarships to Ruston High School seniors Jacob Duke and David Reid. On hand for the award presentation were (left to right) Adam McGuirt, Gary Strebeck, Duke, Reid, Sabrina Love and Brady Dubois. McGuirt, Strebeck, Love and Dubois comprised the Scholarship Committee for Lincoln Rotary.

Centenary College awards diplomas to three from area

The following Lincoln Parish residents were among the 218 students from Centenary College of Louisiana who were awarded degrees during the College’s 2013 Commencement Exercise held Saturday, May 4:
• Adam Robert Littleton, a resident of Downsville, received a BA in Psychology Cum Laude.
• Dessie Lee Clark, a resident of Ruston, received a BA in Psychology Cum Laude.
• Jalena Rachelle Sanders, a resident of Ruston, received a BS in Accounting and Business Administration.

Sunrise Kiwanis give away books at LPECC

Fresh on the heels of being named a KEYS Champion for 2012-13, Ruston’s Sunrise Kiwanis Club wrapped up its yearlong “Young Children Priority One” reading program at the Lincoln Parish Early Childhood Center by presenting each student with a book to take home for the summer. Teachers were provided a list of book titles to select from in order to better meet the needs of the young students. Sunrise Kiwanis members Janie Humphries (Program Chair) and the Rev. Lynn Hawkins are seen with LPECC teacher Melinda Killen’s students, who were happy to show their copies of Big Wide Mouth Frog by Ana Martin Larranga.

DHS announces top graduates

Dubach High School’s 2012-13 valedictorian and salutatorian were announced this week. Summer Robinson (left) was named valedictorian while Nohemi Hernandez (right) was named salutatorian. Both graduates plan to continue their educations at Louisiana Tech University.

Ellis earns scholarship

Kiera Ellis, a senior at Dubach High School, has been named the recipient of the Donna Brazzel Scholarship, which awards $500 to an outstanding FBLA member. Ellis is also the recipient of the Queen Esther Lewis Scholarship given by Mt. Zion No. 2 Baptist Church. She plans to attend Grambling State University.

Bearcats: ‘Good effort’

Laird pleased with 10-7 spring game win over Calvary

When Ruston High School’s annual spring workouts kicked off on May 6, all new Head Coach Brad Laird asked of his players was to give a good effort.
“That’s what we talked about from the very start,” he said. “It was about giving a good effort consistently any time we were on the field.”
And that’s exactly what the Bearcats did in a 10-7 spring game victory over Calvary Baptist in Shreveport on Friday night.

Bulldogs end season with 3-2 loss to UTSA

A tough season finally came to an end for Louisiana Tech University’s baseball team on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the University of Texas-San Antonio.
The Bulldogs suffered their third consecutive defeat — all against the Roadrunners in the Western Athletic Conference series held at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park — and dropped their fourth contest in the past five outings.
