For the better part of the past four decades, I’ve rubbed elbows with hundreds of other members of the outdoor media. I could probably count on one hand with a finger or two left over those of the media who have been less than creditable to the profession. The overwhelming majority are professional people who make sure readers, listeners or viewers get the outdoors story conveyed the way it should.

Lincoln Parish Museum fund drive under way

The Lincoln Parish Museum and Historical Society is in the process of our annual fund drive for 2013.
We are not funded by the state or the federal government. The organization is funded by the citizens of this parish, and we are very proud of this. We have been a museum for 38 years, and we are looking forward to many more years.

The emotional seasons of our lives

The past couple of months have been difficult for me, as I have been especially ready for the cold, dark, short days of winter to pass. For some reason, I have felt more burdened by this very necessary winter season that comes along once every year. There seems to be a heaviness that has accompanied the past winter months, and I am glad to begin shedding the layers of extra weight that winter sometimes brings to me physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Being homesick

I started writing this column in 1996. It’s hard to believe that as of February I have continued through several editors, wondering when they would tell me,
“We’ve heard enough from you,” and when seven years ago I moved here, I was sure it would be the end of it, but editor Chuck Cannon suggested I continue by email from Dallas and I jumped at the chance.

Reviving the neighborhood

SOCA 5k, sprint set to kick off April 27

Area residents looking to get outside for a nice spring morning and a chance to better the city of Ruston will get that opportunity April 27 as the fifth annual SOCA 5K Walk/Sprint is set for a 9:30 a.m. start.
Ruston residents will have the chance to take a nice stroll or run through the neighborhood south of California Avenue on Saturday morning.
Registration, which is $25 for individuals and $100 for a five-person team, begins at 8:30 a.m. at Mays Chapel Church. That registration will include lunch and a T-shirt. Volunteers will pay $10 and will receive lunch and a T-shirt.

FBC to host WMU convention

First Baptist Church of Ruston will host the 2013 state Women Missionary Union meeting today and Saturday, sponsored by the WMU of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the WMU. Registration will open at 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. today and at 8 a.m. Saturday in the atrium of FBC.

La. Tech’s Big Event on tap

On Saturday, Louisiana Tech University students will continue an 11-year tradition of service to the residents of Ruston and the surrounding communities by hosting the Big Event. This event has become the largest one-day, student-run project.
Tech students and faculty go to homes, churches and businesses to complete a variety of activities including painting, yard work, cleaning and other tasks disabled or elderly members of the community cannot do themselves, or those that local businesses and churches need help to complete.
