Easter holiday heralds season of life, possibilities

Today is Easter Sunday, the most important and oldest festival of the Christian church, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion.
For others of the world’s religions, the week that led up to today had special significance: Passover for the Jewish community, and for others, various observances tied to their traditions. But whether the context is secular or sacred, the concept of rebirth runs through all of the celebrations.

Incredible is the only word we can think to describe our sixth annual Dinner and A Movie at Lincoln Parish Park on March 15.
We had more than 830 people in attendance, 36 booths with activities for children, too many giveaways to count, a puppet show, cheerleaders, dancers, gymnasts, games, raffles, story time, popcorn, cotton candy and, of course, the movie!

As the 2011-12 school year drew to a close, we were faced with adhering to the guidelines handed down from the Justice Department regarding the desegregation of the four Ruston elementary schools. Not knowing what to expect, we were challenged with reconfiguring the four schools and ensuring as smooth a move as possible.

Imagining the first Easter

Lost and found. That small phrase conjures up ideas of losing a wallet, purse, or in this time a cell phone; panic setting in; then going to an office to find the lost. But some things when lost cannot be found. Many of us have “lost” friends, family and associates to death. We intellectually know that it happens, but it is still painful to lose someone.
I sometimes wonder what those men and women of 2,000 years ago felt this commemorative morning of Easter when Jesus had been gone. He had foretold that he would rise, but we humans don’t listen very well. The humans in His close group probably didn’t listen or understand. All they knew was that their Lord had just died a horrific death.

Business owners must plan for later

in
Fallin, Randy.jpg

If you own a business, you may well follow a “do it now” philosophy — which is, of course, necessary to keep things running smoothly. Still, you also need to think about tomorrow — which means you’ll want to take action on your own retirement and business succession plans.
Fortunately, you’ve got some attractive options in these areas. For example, you could choose a retirement plan that offers at least two key advantages: potential tax-deferred earnings and a wide array of investment options. Plus, some retirement plans allow you to make tax-deductible contributions.

Stay smart when making plans for a windfall

Moore, Byron.jpg

Question: I owe about $20,000 on two debts. The only other debt is my house note. I just got about twice that much in a settlement. Should I save all of it or pay off the two debts I have? The interest on both accounts is only 5.9 percent. My husband wants to pay both off, but I don’t think we should. Thanks for your help.

Make sure your IRA plays by the rules

Conville, Bobby.jpg

For years, taxpayers who made mistakes with their IRAs usually corrected the errors and notified the IRS — and escaped unscathed. The agency was not as strict with enforcing penalties, and taxpayers often didn’t even hear from regulators.

Some leftover observations from the now completed season for Lincoln Parish’s college hoops’ teams:
• How about one more round of applause for Head Coach Michael White and the Bulldogs of Louisiana Teach University?
They deserve it, that’s for sure.
