Tech architecture students complete project for park entrance

Twelve weeks of designing, planning and building culminated May 18 with a ceremony to mark the opening of a second entrance-kiosk at Huckleberry Trails Park and Nature Area.
Students, parents and neighbors gathered for grilled burgers and enjoyed sides while congratulating and thanking the third-year students from the Louisiana Tech University School of Architecture for all of their hard work to complete the project. The newest entrance is located at the corner of Cypress Springs and D’Arbonne streets.

Techsters seek state honors

Can Anna Cross go two-for-two in being named for a Freshman of the Year award?
The Louisiana Tech University infielder/pitcher has that opportunity as one of eight representatives from her team to be nominated for the 2013 All-Louisiana squad to be voted on by a Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel.
Cross is one of seven candidates for the state’s top first-year honor after having earned Freshman of the Year accolades in the Western Athletic Conference.

Memorial set for Smart

A memorial has been established for Louisiana Tech University and Summerfield High graduate and former high school boys’ basketball coach Brian Lee “Butch” Smart.
Memorials may be made in care of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life of Highlands, 79 Cook Road, Highlands, N.C., 28741, attention: Mike Murphy.
Smart, who served as a head coach for the boys’ teams at Cedar Creek High and Dubach High and totaled 44 years in the profession, passed away last Wednesday at the age of 69 following a lengthy battle against cancer.

Tech tennis: A super spring

One of the best kept secrets in the athletic program at Louisiana Tech University during the recently completed 2013 season was on the tennis courts.
But maybe the “secret” is starting to get unveiled more and more as new Head Coach Freddy Gomez and his team prepares for next spring.
Last weekend, it was announced that the Techsters’ Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova were chosen as second unit representatives on the All-Louisiana collegiate squad picked by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Get rid of pesky grasshoppers

With the approach of summer, homeowners and gardeners will notice the approach of one unwelcome creature in the landscape. Eastern lubber grasshoppers, also known as graveyard grasshoppers, are one of the few grasshoppers that can seriously damage agricultural and landscape crops. The lubber grasshopper is native to the southeastern and south central portion of the United States. Lubbers often invade residential areas and feast on flowering plants. These grasshoppers will migrate long distances to obtain preferred food, sometimes forming trails and following one another.

Drive safely and buckle up

Last week, my husband and I were driving home to enjoy our lunch break when we noticed some strange things going on with the car in front of us. The first oddity was that someone was throwing something tiny out of the white Jeep-like vehicle every 30 seconds or so. The best guess we came up with was the passenger was eating sunflower seeds.
