Celebrating a friend’s 100 years young birthday party

My friend, Velda Murphy, had her 100th birthday party on Saturday at my church, Meadows Baptist. The affair was “standing room only.”
I’m telling you, friends, Texans know how to throw a party, and this one was over the top. I think it was supposed to be a come and go event, but we all came and stayed.
One of the most unbelievable things about it was her siblings who came from far and near — like Missouri and California and points in between.

Cox, Ourso to exchange vows

Dr. Carey and Colleen Cox, of Ruston, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Christine Noel Cox, to Clifton Noel Ourso Jr., of Donaldsonville.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Herman and Mary Manuel, of Ruston. She is a 2005 graduate of Ruston High School and a 2009 gradate of Louisiana State University where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She is currently employed as a registered nurse at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.

Annual Johnny Jam begins tonight

The 14th annual John Simoneaux Memorial Jam kicks off at 8:30 p.m. today at Sundown Tavern with a pre-jam. The main event is set for 5 p.m. to midnight Saturday at both Sundown Tavern and Ponchatoulas.
This annual event serves to honor the memory of John Simoneaux, a local musician who was killed in a car crash in 2000. It also serves as a fundraiser for scholarships for Louisiana Tech University music students.
The band Cruise Control, pictured above, entertained the crowd during the 2012 event.

Jury appoints members to various organizations

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury confirmed a number of board appointments as it held its second meeting of 2013 last week.
During that meeting the following board appointments were confirmed:
• Tiffany Baldwin to the Retail Merchants Association Representative to the Ruston Lincoln Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Ronny Walker to fill the unexpired term (running through Dec. 31, 2014) of Skip Russell as Police Jury representative for the Ruston Lincoln Convention and Visitor’s Bureau

Learning to be debt free

With so much talk about the national debt, it is easy to forget that there are individuals who are struggling with their own budget issues. For those interested in learning to live debt free, and who want to participate in a free seminar at the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, Centric Federal Credit Union is sponsoring “Debt Free with Kelly.”
Kelly Brantley, owner of Financial Freedom Counseling Service, will deliver the seminar on various topics that hinder or help financial wellness.

Parish offers smoke alarms

Residents in Lincoln Parish now have the opportunity to feel a little bit safer in their homes.
The Lincoln Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 is participating in the Operation Save A Life program. This program has been provided by Louisiana State Fire Marshal.
Through Operation Save A Life, Lincoln Parish Fire District can provide the citizens of Lincoln Parish with smoke detectors, as well as the installation of them.
State and parish fire officials believe that smoke alarms are extremely vital in increasing residents’ chance of survival in a house fire.

‘Exploring Abandonment’ opening

On March 3, The North Central Louisiana Arts Council will present Becky Bennett’s paintings in the exhibit, “Exploring Abandonment,” at Crescent City Coffeehouse. An opening reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. on this day with fresh coffee and treats from the Crescent City kitchen. With graduation the same weekend, this exhibition will be a great opportunity for visiting families to experience some of Ruston’s local artwork.

Elli Dickerson donates hair to Pink Hearts

On Dec.26, Elli Dickerson donated 10 inches of her hair to Pink Hearts Fund in Mississippi. This was Elli's second hair donation to Pink Hearts. She has donated more than 20 inches of hair total.

Proper property move for LPPJ

It’s only right.
Property-owners in Lincoln Parish have to pay property taxes. But some owners of seemingly abandoned property have not been paying taxes, thereby taking money from parish coffers.
But now the Lincoln Parish Police Jury finally has a plan for selling adjudicated property following last week’s LPPJ meeting. The jury at that meeting passed a motion to accept a proposal from Gilmore Auction and Realty Company based out of Kenner for adjudicated property disposition services in Lincoln Parish.
