Outbreak of flu in Lincoln

Some diagnosed had a vaccine

Schools and businesses may begin feeling the strain as more than 500 Lincoln Parish residents have been diagnosed with the flu this season at two local offices alone.
Nationwide, the flu has reached near epidemic proportions, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Louisiana is one of 29 states reporting high instances of flu-like illness.
Local doctors have seen a great deal of flu-activity, even in those who followed the suggestion to get a flu shot.

Transportation service meets needs of parish

When Johnny McCarter needs to go to dialysis treatment, he does not drive or catch a ride from a friend. Instead, he is transported by Lincoln Parish’s public transportation system.
“I ride on Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” McCarter said. “I really depend on it. It would be rough — really hard on me — if they didn’t have it.”

Current, anticipated cuts threaten DART

Positions eliminated; advocates criticize new victim shelter model

The Domestic Abuse Resistance Team is cutting expenses and reducing some services after being hit with a midyear state budget cut.
Terrie Queen Autrey, DART community advocate, said domestic violence programs under the state Division of Child and Family Services were cut 21.2 percent, or almost a million dollars.
What this means locally is that instead of getting the full $400,000 in state funding for the fiscal year from July 2012 to June 2013, DART will receive $63,000 less.
