Tech tennis team adds two signees

Louisiana Tech University tennis head coach Freddy Gomez has announced the additions of Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova to his Lady Techster squad.
“We are very excited to welcome (Joanna and Alexandra)to the team,” said Gomez. “They both come to Tech with plenty of experience in high-level competition in their own countries. They are both very humble and hard-working individuals who want to achieve so much on and off the courts, and they are a perfect fit on our team. I look forward to coaching both of them.”
Nalborska is a native of Warsaw, Poland and comes to Ruston having been ranked as high as No. 1 in U12, U14, and U16 juniors in her home country.

RPAR sets 2013 slate for softball

Spring and summer softball action is nearing for the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department.
Divisions of competition to be offered by RPAR will include men’s “E”, coed and men’s Church.
Team fees will remain at $280 and are due April 24. Payments can be made at the RPAR office located at 605 James Street between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Southern Living Idea Home on tour

A garden tour, sponsored by the Ruston Garden Club, will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. April 27. The 2006 Southern Living Idea Home in Squire Creek, pictured above, owned by Todd and Renee Davison, is one of three gardens on the tour. Tickets are currently available at the Ruston-Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau offices located at 2111 N. Trenton St., Twin Oaks Nursery located at 630 E. Georgia St. and at Townsend House located at 410 N. Bonner St.

Remembering Ruston, being a new parent

Ruston is the home town that just keeps on giving. I’ve talked to four people from home this past week, so don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to.
I taught in Simsboro for three years before moving into the Ruston school system, so one of my students, whom I remember well, was Oliver Houck. I knew he married Mary Jo Atkins who went to Ruston High Scholl, but never knew her quite as well.

A lunch hour crash: No serious injuries reported

A traffic accident that occurred around noon Thursday left traffic lanes on South Monroe Street congested as officers as one lane was closed due to two-car collision.
According to reports, 19-year-old Kayla Lance, of Dodson, failed to obey the traffic sign while traveling east on Louisiana Avenue in a 2003 Ford pick-up truck, and struck a 2005 Chrysler Sebring driven by Justina Rice, of Minden.
Rice was transported to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center for minor to moderate injuries.

RPD suspect found hiding in an attic

A Ruston man wanted on several warrants was found hiding in an attic Thursday morning, which subsequently led the Ruston Police Department to arrested another suspect for accessory after the fact.
According to the arrest affidavit, Timothy Dewayne Rhone, 35, of 1405 Cardinal St., was wanted in connection to warrants issued for aggravated burglary, violation of a protective order, simple criminal damage to property, aggravated assault and aggravated second degree battery.

Percussion group to take stage at Tech Monday

On Monday, the Louisiana Tech University School of Performing Arts will welcome a group that has been named “the premier new music percussion ensemble in Texas and the South.”
“This is the first time the trio has appeared at Louisiana Tech,” Gregory Lyons, assistant professor of music, said. “In the department of music at Louisiana Tech, we are always interested in exposing our students to new artists.”
