Maggie Manning of Cedar Creek High School is only in her first season of prep tennis competition, but she compiled a 16-1 record in singles and reached the 2013 Louisiana High School Athletic Association state tournament earlier this week for Class A. Manning captured the recent regional 1A singles’ championship before participating at the state tourney held in Monroe. She had a 3-0 record at regionals.

GSU women ink prep star with 32.1 rebounding mark

GRAMBLING — Help is on the way for Grambling State University’s basketball team for women and in a big way.
You think signing a player who averaged — yes, averaged — 31 points and 32.1 rebounds per game during her senior season in high school could maybe stall the struggles experienced by the Lady Tigers this past year?
Yes, probably so.
That’s what Head Coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs got when she signed Ahlisha Henderson earlier this week.

Doris Robinson: Birthday No. 94

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Get the big birthday cake out, complete with 94 candles.
Doris Robinson, the 94-year-old wife of the late and legendary Eddie Robinson, longtime record-setting head football coach at Grambling State University, will be treated with a special birthday party tonight from 5-7 p.m. at the Eddie G. Robinson Museum.
The general public is invited to wish Robinson — “The First Lady of Area Football” as the Ruston Daily Leader’s front page headline on Monday read — the happiest of birthdays.

RHS, Creek: Playoff games Monday

Two Lincoln Parish’s teams that remain on the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s annual baseball postseason stage try and keep their 2013 schedules intact on Monday.
That’s when Ruston High plays at home in Class 5A and Cedar Creek goes on a brief road trip in Class 1A for their regional and quarterfinal round challenges, respectively.
The Bearcats (30-5) will meet Sulphur (23-11) in a 5 p.m. start and the Cougars (22-9) will take a 30-minute drive to Monroe for a 5 p.m. duel against Ouachita Christian (29-5).
Both games will have admission charges of $7.

RPAR sets ‘Home Run Derby’

The time is nearing for sluggers to get out their best bats and start preparing for the annual “Home Run Derby” to be sponsored by the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department.
Set for the J.C. Love Complex on May 11 at 6:30 p.m., the “Derby” will have each participant get a total of 10 outs to register as many homers as possible.
Foul balls and swinging strikes will count as outs. Softballs will be provided by the RPAR and only those softballs can be used during the competition.

Starkova on All-WAC tourney squad

Freshman Alexandra Starkova was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Tournament team for singles after leading Louisiana Tech University to the leaguesemifinals last week at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo.
The native of Madrid, Spain was dominant at the No. 2 position, delivering straight set victories versus Texas State in the quarterfinals and No. 66 nationally-ranked San Jose State in the semis.
Starkova overpowered the Bobcats’ Melissa Hadad 6-1, 6-3 as the Lady Techsters advanced to the next round with a 4-0 shutout.

Tech golfers finish No. 10

HENDERSON, Nev. — Louisiana Tech University had a three-day total of 305-310-318-933 to finish No. 10 in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference golf tournament that concluded at the Rio Secco course on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs placed freshman Victor Lange and junior Travis Wilmore on the All-WAC squad that was announced in conjunction with the tournament.
Lange ended the tourney with a 70-77-76-223 and tied for No. 5, while Wilmore registered a score chart of 79-769-76-234 to deadlock for No. 33.
