The ‘value’ of being a biker

New tax assessor enjoys riding motorcycles as a hobby

When local residents hear the roar of motorcycles speeding by, Sheila Glover Bordelon could be among those enjoying the open air on her Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe.
The new Lincoln Parish tax assessor said her parents, former Police Juror Roy Glover and church daycare worker Ellen Glover, refused to let her purchase a motorcycle when she was younger. But about five years ago, Bordelon cruised down the driveway she shares with her parents in a Honda Shadow Ace bike.

When Sonny Dykes got the head coaching job at the University of California, he hired several assistants off of his staff at Louisiana Tech University.
Now, one of the Bears’ current assistants will be headed to North Louisiana.
An official university announcement is expected soon for former NFL player and assistant coach Ronald L. “Ronnie” Bradford to be hired as a member of the Tech staff being put together by new Head Coach Skip Holtz Jr.
Bradford, 42, is scheduled to be a member of the Tech’s defensive coaching corps, plus he has experience as a special teams’ tutor.

Prep hoopsters tip off new year

A new year means the start of several busy months of hoops.
Or basketball if you will.
That’s certainly the case with Lincoln Parish and its high school programs, several of which have been playing regular season games since October.
But now is the time of the year when the interest, enthusiasm and importance of each game increases to an even greater level.
Just as in past years, the parish has the potential of providing several representatives in the annual Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs, possibly even the state tournament.

Tips to avoid 'crape murder'

in
Rogers, Sara.jpg

I’ve received a dozen or more phone calls during the past month or so regarding pruning various landscape plants. The majority of the callers have either inquired into the proper timing for pruning shade trees or crape myrtles. Today I want to discuss the latter because of a disturbing trend in the landscape industry, especially throughout the South, known as “crape murder.” And, unfortunately, it is occurring earlier and earlier each year. “Crape murder” refers to the practice of topping crape myrtles which gives them a crew-cut appearance.

The unlimited possibilities of 'intelligence'

DeGrie, Elizabeth.jpg

If asked to name their best friend, most people would have a name ready — and it wouldn’t be Google (though Siri — the iPhone’s digital assistant program — might have a shot at some people’s top five list).
But, Google’s new Director of Engineering Ray Kurzweil hopes to change all of our minds on that subject. He plans to make Google so indispensable that it predicts what we’re going to ask.

Good time to plant woody shrubs and trees

in
Hotard, Steven.jpg

After these last cold fronts, I would be safe to claim that the dormant season for most woody landscape plants has arrived. Deciduous trees and shrubs are leafless, making the landscape looking bare except for where the foliage of evergreen plants keep their color. It is a good time to observe the winter characteristics of landscape plants, such as bark textures and colors, growth form, winter fruit and interesting bud formation. There are many trees and shrubs which exhibit outstanding winter beauty and are often chosen for the landscape because of these features.
