Tech hurdlers shine at LSU ‘Gold’ meet

Yusuf Muhammad ran the fourth-fastest 400-meter men’s hurdles time in school history and Kim Francis set the third-fastest 100-m women’s hurdle time, as Louisiana Tech University competed at the LSU Alumni Gold at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge last weekend.
Muhammad ran 50.90 in the 400-m hurdles, finishing second with the fourth-fastest time in Tech history and a personal record time for the junior.

Choudrant increases season record to 20-9

CHOUDRANT — Choudrant High’s baseball team made it to the elusive 20-win plateau on Monday afternoon with an 11-3 victory over Farmerville.
The Aggies of veteran Head Coach Tony Antley improved to a 20-9 record behind the pitching of winning pitcher Lane Nutt and the offensive contributions of Matt Younse (three-for-four), Ethan Barr (two-for-four) and Matt Bullock (two-for-three).

Bearcats on road

Senior outfielder Ivan Wilson, Jr., will be in the starting lineup tonight when Ruston High School’s District 2-5A champions play at Bossier City Airline High School tonight at 6 p.m. Wilson was one of the offensive leaders in the Bearcats’ 2-5A, title-clinching sweep over Pineville High last weekend. The Bearcats, who host Shreveport Byrd Thursday, have an overall record of 27-5.

Creek awaits playoffs

Wes Gresham, a sophomore outfielder, will be helping Cedar Creek High School start action in the Class 1A Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs later this week when postseason pairings are announced. The Cougars closed out their regular season schedule on Monday with a 5-4 loss at Mangham. Cedar Creek has an overall record of 20-9.

Tech tennis earns No. 3 tourney seed

Freddy Gomez’s Louisiana Tech University tennis team have earned the No. 3 seed in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis tournament to be hosted by the University of Denver at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo., later this week.
In just his first season as head coach, Gomez guided Tech to its best conference season in program history, gaining its highest seed ever with a 7-1 mark in WAC play.
Previously, the Lady Techsters were a combined 1-26 against WAC opponents during the regular season.

Grambling, Tech now look to fall

Next assignment for Lincoln Parish’s collegiate football programs: the 2013 season.
Two weeks ago, Louisiana Tech University concluded its spring workouts.
Last weekend, it was Grambling State University’s turn to put the wraps on its spring ritual.
Now, the Bulldogs and Tigers look ahead to fall training camp in August, then regular season openers in the latter part of that month.

The bright side of composting

Here it is in early spring in Louisiana and most homeowners have been working outside cleaning up weeds, raking leaves, mowing the lawn and enhancing landscape beds in the yard. But, what about all of those sticks, twigs and leaves? What should we do with those items? In an effort to reduce the amount of trash and debris heading to landfills, kitchen and garden wastes can be incorporated into a composting program in your own back yard.

Hatred is not the solution

On Monday afternoon, the City of Boston observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the terror that tore through the city one-week prior.
As of right now, there are still so many questions left. Why did this happen? Why did the bombers choose to place a bomb next to an adorable little boy? Could someone have prevented this? Why?
Perhaps in the coming days, as the remaining bomber is questioned some of the mysteries will be solved.
