Tech ‘Inside’ show set to air Monday

Louisiana Tech University basketball head coaches Teresa Weatherspoon and Michael White will review and preview the latest with both the Techsters and the Bulldogs on the Centric Federal Credit Union’s “Inside Tech Basketball” show presented by Miller Light as part of the LA Tech Sports Network on on Monday at 6 p.m. at Scott’s Catfish.

Tech to present ‘Opera Workshop: Love and Luck’

The Louisiana Tech University School of the Performing Arts is proud to announce the cast for the winter quarter production of “Opera Workshop: Love and Luck,” directed by Lisa Maxedon.
Performances are scheduled to run at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday in Stone Theatre, located in the Howard Center for the Performing Arts, on the corner of Adams Boulevard and West Arizona Avenue.

DART receives large donation

Kim Birch, owner of Townsend House Gifts, presents Domestic Abuse Resistance Team Community Advocate Terrie Queen Autrey with the proceeds of the Eighth Annual Pumpkin Patch For DART. This year's event raised more than $3,500.
"This will help us to offset a small part of the devastating budget cuts recently issued throughout the state," Autrey said. "We appreciate a supporter like Kim."

Cook-off to benefit St. Jude

The 22nd Annual St. Jude Chili Cook-Off is right around the corner, and cooks from across the nation are making plans to attend.
Minden has again been designated as the site for the 2013 Louisiana State Championship. State Championships not only draw more cooks but the first three Louisiana cooks that place automatically qualify for the World Championships held in Terlingua, Texas during the first weekend of November.

Chilli
Ingredients
• 2 teaspoons canola oil
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 cup chopped onion
• 1 stick celery, chopped
• 1 red bell pepper, chopped
• 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
• 1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes (with jalapenos, if available)
• 2 tablespoons tomato paste
• 1 15-ounce can dark red kidney beans, drained
• 1 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained
• 2-3 tablespoon chili powder, or to taste
• 1 tablespoon ground cumin

Revamping Choudrant

Village may begin sidewalk project this year

If all goes as Mayor Bill Sanderson would hope, the Village of Choudrant should be much more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically-pleasing by the time residents ring in 2014.
Sanderson said the village has been working since 2006 on a revitalization project, similar to the one Ruston has been doing for the past few years.
Riley Company, a local engineering consultancy firm, recently submitted the design for the project to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

Lending kids a hand

Ruston City Council votes to give local club $50K

Ruston City Council members took action on Monday that will allow the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana to receive a funding boost.
The city has an annual agreement with the club where it agrees to allow the club use of certain facilities, pay all utility bills, provide all grounds maintenance and give $30,000 to be used by the club with the administration of programs and services.
Located on Memorial Drive, the club offers after-school programs and summer camps for local children.

Soccer sign-up deadline approaching

Children who dream of running down the field dribbling a soccer ball will have their chance as spring soccer begins in mid-February.
While the games won’t start until Feb. 16, the deadline to sign up is quickly approaching.
Ashlynn Shell, Ruston Parks and Recreation recreation supervisor, said those interested in playing the sport this season have until 5 p.m. Jan. 25 to become a part of the action.
