’Dogs play at Arkansas-Little Rock tonight

The Louisiana Tech (8-3) men’s basketball team concludes their non-conference schedule prior to Western Athletic Conference play tonight, as they take on UALR (8-4) at 7 p.m. in Little Rock, Ark. inside the Jack Stephens Center.
The Bulldogs look to get over their recent road struggles before Christmas break as they have dropped their last two games away from the Thomas Assembly Center, but it will a tough task as the Trojans are a perfect 7-0 at home this season.

Mandate can be good for parish

Starting with the 2013-14 school year, local teachers’ paychecks will be much more closely tied to their performance, instead of just their experience and education.
While demand and experience still account for some of the equation, the biggest factor will be the rating teachers receive on their annual evaluations.

Be sensitive to holiday grieving

Friday, we learned of another mass shooting. Instead of a crowded area filled with a range of demographics, this shooter chose an elementary school filled with children. Most of his victims — 27 in all — were children. The other six were adults at the school, while another was at a different location.

Child rapist gets life sentence

A Ruston man convicted of aggravated rape of a child under the age of 13 was sentenced by Judge Wayne Smith to life in prison without the benefit of parole, probation or suspension on Dec. 12.

Tiger Band drummer killed

A Tiger Marching Band drummer from Shreveport who was killed in a vehicle wreck on Thursday night was scheduled to graduate from Grambling State University the next day.
Instead, the father of Michael Hubbard Jr., 25, accepted the diploma on his behalf for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

City of Ruston to add turning lanes

Most anyone who drives down U.S. Highway 167 near Reynolds Drive around 5 p.m. encounters traffic congestion.
Within the next year, action will likely be taken to help facilitate traffic flow in this area. 
Ed Pittman, Ruston assistant city administrator, said the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has authorized $800,000 for a project at the intersection. There would be a right turn lane on U.S. 167 onto Reynolds Drive and a right turn lane on westbound Reynolds Drive onto U.S. 167.
