Man charged with strangling victim

According to reports, John Bennett Jr. 45, of Ruston, was arrested after Ruston police responded to a domestic call on Jan. 2.
The affidavit said Bennett and his girlfriend got into a verbal argument that turned physical when the suspect grabbed the victim and placed her in a chokehold. Two residents were reportedly witness to the altercation.
Bennett was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center with bond to be set on charges of domestic battery — strangulation.

Tech art professor lectures at New Orleans festival

Frank Hamrick, an associate art professor at Louisiana Tech University, said New Orleans is a great place for an artist because there are a lot of photo-based art displays.
They were on full display recently because he visited the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), a pre-professional arts high school, to lecture. The lecture was part of the Photo NOLA Festival, which is held each year in December at the Ogden Museum of Art.

Swain keynote speaker for gardening seminar

Roger Swain, former host of PBS’s “Victory Garden” will be the keynote speaker for the Third Annual Gardening Seminar on Jan. 19.
The event takes place at the West Monroe Convention Center with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at noon.

Schools need protection

Now that Lincoln Parish students are back in school this week, they can return to their lesson plans, hopefully with peace of mind.
With December’s mass shooting that killed multiple children at an elementary school in Connecticut, local school leaders and law enforcement officers have enhanced their efforts to ensure that the school environments are safe.

Encounters with Gov. Edwards

I first met Edwin Edwards in the summer of 1975. My editor said he was tired of covering the then-governor, so he sent me, the cub reporter.
Edwards was in town to attend a fundraiser for the late Sen. Charles Barham. I caught up with the governor at the Holiday Inn, and stayed on his heels until I could no longer see the lights of his plane as it finally cleared Lincoln Parish airspace late that night.

Funeral services for Lonie Kay, age 68 of Dubach will be 2:00 PM Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Hico Baptist Church in Hico, LA. Officiating the service will be Bro. Don Cardin and Bro. Connie Smith. Interment will follow at Henry Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mrs. Kay was born April 4, 1944 and passed away January 7, 2013 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Kay was a member of Hico Baptist Church, and the local M.S. support group.

Melvin Burgess

Funeral services for Melvin Burgess, age 82, of Dubach will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Bro. Randy Ray.
Interment will follow at St Rest Cemetery near Dubach under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mr. Burgess was born July 21, 1930 and passed away January 8, 2013.

Mr. Burgess was a member of the St. Rest Baptist Church, and served in the United States Army.

Mayor Edward R. Jones opened the regular session of the Grambling City Council at 6:00 p.m. at Grambling City Hall. Mr. William Arrington offered the invocation and led the council and congregation into the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were the following Council members: Birdex Copeland, Jr., Yanise Days, Cathy Holmes, Cullen Jackson and Roy Jackson. It was moved by Council member Roy Jackson and seconded by Council member Yanise Days to adopt the Minutes dated November 1, 2012.
