Agritourism is growing at a fast pace across our nation as landowners tap into the tourism industry. Last month in Lake Charles I had the opportunity to speak about the role of agriculture in rural tourism before attendees at the Lt. Governor’s Tourism Summit.

Passing on your worldview

Someone recently told me she wanted her children to “think for themselves.” Not me, I said. If I was still in my active parenting years, I would most definitely want my children to think like I do. That would be, in fact, my primary purpose. I would want them to accept that my values are the right values to hold and I’d want them to eventually make every effort to pass those values on to their children. But then, I don’t subscribe to the postmodern notion that all values are equal. I’m not a relativist.

The new face of assessments

I remember the excitement that was computer lab day in elementary school. We’d line up — behind the designated line leader for the day — and head over to the room filled with early generation Apple computers. Games such as Oregon Trail, which seemed much like an interactive story with graphics that resembled the early Mario Brothers games, made the week that much more exciting.

The Bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Dorothy Whitecotton and the late Harry Whitecotton, of Shreveport, and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Mire, of Lake Charles.

Judge and Mrs. Glenn Fallin, of Arcadia, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Elizabeth Fallin, to Timothy Ryan Deering, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Deering, of San Diego, Calif.

Ashley is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Gene Goodwin, of Haynesville, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Jackson Fallin, of Shreveport.

Two dead following weekend wrecks

Two drivers not wearing seatbelts are dead following weekend accidents in Union and Ouachita Parishes.
At 8:16 a.m. Sunday, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 550 east of Louisiana Highway 15.

Salon, boutique make for a one-stop shop

Although the Boardwalk Salon opened in Downtown Ruston in May of 2005, the recent addition of The Attic within the store gives shoppers the opportunity to make one stop in the hair, skin and clothes department.
“Our customers love having The Attic available to look around while they are waiting for their appointment or while their color is processing,” said Erin Foster, stylist and co-owner of The Boardwalk Salon and The Attic.
