GSU celebrates Christmas

Christmas is a few weeks away, but late Thursday afternoon seemed like Christmas for a bit, absent young children and the opening of gifts.
The Christmas spirit flooded Grambling State University’s Black and Gold room and atrium as Frank G. and Dorothy Pogue, the university president and first lady, greeted and entertained students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. The rooms were filled with the sound of jazz on a stage lined with live poinsettias and a large, brightly-lit Christmas tree stood front and center.

Sims, of West Monroe, to promote book

The author of “Not Without Purpose,” Phil Sims will be in the Lincoln Community Room at 6 p.m. Tuesday. In Sims’ first mystery novel, a young marine is challenged to believe, a teen's obedience to God is tested, and a small North Carolina mountain town is brought to its knees in prayer.
Sims, a Vietnam veteran, served in the United States Navy for seven years, five of them aboard the USS Midway VA41. He is a Boy Scout scoutmaster and a member of the Gideons International. Phil and his wife, Alma, reside in West Monroe. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.
