Another Laird on RHS block

Add on another member of the Laird family to the Ruston High School athletics staff.
This morning, it became official: Brad Laird is the new head football coach for the Bearcats, where father and former head coach Billy Laird serves as the athletics’ director.
The younger Laird was introduced as the new head coach at a press conference held this morning in the teachers’ lounge at RHS.
Here’s a dozen things to know about the “new” Laird in Bearcat Nation:
1-His full name is Stephen Brad Laird. His nickname is “Dr. D.”

Leaping for Tigers

Clifford Williams (35) and Daniel Ogunyemi (tipping basketball) will be reaching for rebounds for Simsboro High School tonight when the No. 5 Class B/C ranked Tigers play host to Doyline High in a regular-season finale. The Tigers have a 23-6 record and will feature “Senior Night” activities with the contest against Doyline.

Charitable events set for WAC home games

The Louisiana Tech University Lady Techster basketball team will return home this week for two critical Western Athletic Conference games as head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and Co. will host Seattle Thursday and Idaho Saturday.
Both games are set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Promotions have been set around both games this week as Thursday night will be the “THINK PINK” Breast Cancer Awareness Game, while Saturday will be March of Dimes Night.

RGSA to start registration session

Registration for the 2013 season will begin for the Ruston Girls Softball Association on Saturday.
Girls between the ages of 5-to-18 are eligible to participate in the program and can sign up starting Saturday and also on Feb. 23, with time periods for both dates being from 9 a.m.-noon.
Cost is $40 for T-ball and $65 for all other ages.
Individuals can also register via www.rustonsoftball.com or obtaining forms at The Locker Room and The Zone.

Shelton earns national award

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Louisiana Tech guard Kelia Shelton as its Ann Meyers Drysdale women’s National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Feb. 10.
As the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Shelton was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.
