Two dead following weekend wrecks

Two drivers not wearing seatbelts are dead following weekend accidents in Union and Ouachita Parishes.
At 8:16 a.m. Sunday, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 550 east of Louisiana Highway 15.

The topic of discussion during the Grambling Laboratory Middle and High School Parent Teacher Association meeting on Jan. 24 was the option to apply to become a charter school in order to give their students maximum opportunities while pursing their education.

Salon, boutique make for a one-stop shop

Although the Boardwalk Salon opened in Downtown Ruston in May of 2005, the recent addition of The Attic within the store gives shoppers the opportunity to make one stop in the hair, skin and clothes department.
“Our customers love having The Attic available to look around while they are waiting for their appointment or while their color is processing,” said Erin Foster, stylist and co-owner of The Boardwalk Salon and The Attic.

St. Andre donates hair for children in need

For the second time, Preslea St. Andre has donated her hair to Pink Heart Funds of Long Beach, Miss. She donated 12 inches the first time and 10 inches this year on Feb. 1. This organization provides free wigs to children nationwide for most types of hair loss. Also pictured is Adrienne Russell, of La Bella Salon, who helps facilitate the process by sending off the individual pony tails and paperwork to Pink Heart Funds. Those interested donating must have 10 inches of hair and may learn more about all the many services they provide by going to www.pinkheartfunds.org.

Parish hoopsters open playoffs

Ten teams seek advance to Monroe-hosted state event

One and done.
That’s what 10 teams from Lincoln Parish and the rest of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association postseason basketball crew start facing this week.
One loss and this 2012-13 campaign is history.
There’s no tomorrow.
Win and it’s all about moving on to the next round and remaining alive for what teams in seven different classifications hope is a final landing site located at Ewing Coliseum in Monroe later this month and in early March.

Where the semifinals and finals of the 2013 Louisiana High School Athletic Association girls’ and boys’ basketball payoffs will be held:
• Semifinals (both divisions): Feb. 28-March 2, CenturyTel Center, Bossier City; Lake Charles Civic Center, Hammond; Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond.
• Finals (both divisions): March 6-9, Ewing Coliseum, Monroe.

Gatlin signs with Choctaws

Ruston High School’s C.J. Gatlin (seated) recently signed an NCAA national letter-of-intent to play football for the Mississippi College Choctaws of Clinton, Miss. Observing the signing ceremony were (standing, from left) Billy Laird, athletics director at RHS; Christine Gatlin, C.J.’s mother; and Chris Gatlin, C.J.’s father. Gatlin was a first-unit All-District 2-5A selection and honorable mention Class 5A Louisiana Sports Writers Association pick for 2012 after he completed 83-of-156 passes for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed 51 times for 298 yards and five touchdowns.
