Southern board member stirs controversy

Louisiana could save a lot of money and Grambling State University would get more attention if Grambling became part of the Southern University System, says Southern University board member Tony Clayton.
He said Grambling would retain its identity, but would be governed by the Southern Board of Supervisors rather than the University of Louisiana’s board, Clayton said.
“Grambling is not a high priority in the UL system,” he told The Advocate. “They would instantly be a top priority in our system.”

RHS construction moving along

Two new buildings expected for completion in February

Things are moving along, even a little ahead of schedule, with the two construction projects at Ruston High School.
The old agriculture building was torn down, and a new one is being built on the campus. This new building will be much roomier and add three classrooms.

Prolonging the tomato harvest

With the average date of the first killing frost approaching, many home vegetable growers are anxiously keeping an eye on their fall crop of tomatoes. Waiting for green tomatoes to ripen can be nerve racking, especially this time of the year. The final ripening process depends upon temperature, humidity, light levels and other environmental factors. The optimum temperature range for ripening is between 68 and 77 degrees. Outdoor temperatures below or above the optimum range will slow down the ripening process.

Ruston High gets another opportunity to defeat an Interstate Highway 20 rival and Cedar Creek plays a team whose mascot is the Eagles for the second straight week.
That’s the regional round scenario awaiting the Bearcats (6-5) and Cougars (9-2) in the 2012 Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs on Friday night.
In Class 5A, Ruston plays host to Monroe Ouachita High, the No. 6 ranked club in the final Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll who was a 48-33 winner against the ’Cats during the regular season.

Simsboro is champ

SIMSBORO — Simsboro High went into the annual Choudrant High basketball tournament with a 5-0 record in boys’ action and came away with even more glitter on its early season performance.
The Tigers of Head Coach Lance Waldron captured the championship with a 50-38 win over Choudrant. Other wins were against Castor 48-43 and Summerfield 74-44.
Capsuling the top performers for Simsboro in each game:
• Vs. Castor: Daniel Ogunyemi, 16; Jamarco Brown, 10; Ron Abney, nine; Xavier Ogunyemi, eight.
• Vs. Summerfield: Duntavious Harris, 23; X. Ogunyemi, 13; D. Ogunyemi, 10; Abney, nine.

Techsters bumped, 82-58

It had been 30 years since Louisiana Tech University and South Carolina played in women’s basketball when they tangled on the Karl Malone Court of the Thomas Assembly Center on Monday night.
Apparently, there was no “rust” left on the Gamecocks.
With five players scoring in double figures, South Carolina (2-0) stormed past the Lady Techsters (0-2) with a dominating 82-58 victory in front of 1,525 fans.

Choudrant’s Smith is state champion

NATCHITOCHES — Brandon Smith is No. 1.
The Choudrant High School cross country star came away with Lincoln Parish’s only individual championship on Monday when the annual Louisiana High School Athletic Association cross country meet was held on the campus of Northwestern State University.
Smith captured top honors in Class B boys with a time of 16:32.72 and helped the Aggies finish No. 3 in the team standings with a total of 100 points.
Choudrant also had another Top 10 finisher in Nathan Anderson, who placed No. 5 with a time of 17:20.68.

Warner honored on academic team

Former Ruston High School star Stephen Warner was one of several Louisiana Tech University football players recognized for various honors on Monday.
The senior civil engineering major was joined by teammate and senior running back Ray Holley as an All-District 6 All-Academic honored by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
Other Bulldogs’ players cited for various honors this week:
• Quinton Patton: Senior wide receiver is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation’s top collegiate wide receiver.

Talton honored for Tech legacy

When one thinks of the Louisiana Tech University powerlifting program, one name invariably crops up: Billy Jack Talton.
If ever one individual put a sports team on the map at Tech for decades, then it’s the former Bulldogs’ football lineman.
He is the man who put the famed Tech program on the map. And now his name will be linked to that team forever.
In recent ceremonies connected with annual homecoming activities, the fitness room at the Lambright Intramural Sports Center was named in his honor.
It was an appropriate gesture by the university.
