Cooking with all your senses

With Thanksgiving soon approaching to usher in the season of eating, my thoughts turn to culinary exploration. What will I cook for everyone? Should I try a new recipe, or stick to the classics? Usually I don’t stray far from the traditional during the holidays — it is tradition, after all.

Two injured in October fires

The monthly emergency response statistics for the Lincoln Parish Fire Department for the month of October 2012 have been compiled and released.
The Lincoln Parish Fire Department responded to a total of 26 alarms during the month of October. These 26 alarms consisted of eight structure fires, two grass/woods/brush fires, two car fires, two tractor/equipment fires, two Dumpster fires, four HazMat/natural gas leaks, one false alarm, two good intent calls and three other calls.

Congratulations to Joanitah Nakiggwe for being selected Ruston Junior High School’s 2012 Student of the Year. Students are chosen based on excellent academic achievement, leadership ability and citizenship. Thank you to Josh Shirley of Cane’s, Richard Raue of Hi-Tech Computers, Marie Goree and Mert Douglas who volunteered their time to serve as judges.

Emerald Entertainers bring home awards

Congratulations to our 2012-13 Emerald Entertainers for their excellent performance at Northwestern State University National Dance Alliance Summer Camp in Natchitoches. The EE’s won a Superior Performance for their Home Routine, which exemplifies the NDA standards in dance and performance technique. They also won the NDA Spirit Stick, the Superior Performance for Team Dance, an All American Nominee, Nicole Brashear and two All American Girl Winners, Morgan Corie and Lori Richardson. The Emerald Entertainers will participate in the AllState Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 in New Orleans.

RHS, Creek look to advance

Bearcats, Cougars face first-round tests Friday

Ruston and Creek have challenges at the opposite ends of the state in bi-district state playoff action for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Friday night.
For the Bearcats (5-5), it’s a long trek southward (to Galliano) for a 7 p.m. Class 5A duel against South Lafourche 9-0).
Meanwhile, back in Ruston and at the same time, the Cougars (8-2) have a 1A meeting against Central Catholic (6-4).

Kittens ended OCS shutout streak

GRAMBLING — Maybe it wasn’t a big deal on the surface, but it certainly was for Grambling High School.
In a recent regular season finale, the Kittens lost to No. 1 Class 1A ranked Ouachita Christian High 57-6.
So what’s the big deal.

RHS swimmers win conference title

Boys, girls combine to finish No. 1 at Red River meet

ALEXANDRIA – It is said that second place is the first loser.
The Ruston Bearcat swimmers avoided that moniker with a Red River Conference Championship title recently.
After finishing second in the conference a season ago, the Ruston boys finished first and the girls were third this season and the combined score of 463 points gave the Bearcats the conference crown. Pineville (427 points) finished in second, followed by Alexandria, Natchitoches Central and West Monroe.

Gray squad is GSU leader

GRAMBLING — The annual Grambling State University fall baseball series is continuing with the Gray team winning another squeaker by the score of 5-4 over the Black team to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
The Gray team took advantage of three costly errors by the Black team, while Junior Zach Moreau pitched five innings for the Gray team giving up three runs and striking out four batters.

Alton Theron (Buddy) Riser, Jr.

Funeral services Mr. Alton Theron (Buddy) Riser, Jr., 67, of Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 10, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Farmerville, LA with Rev. Kurt Auger officiating. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Rd., Monroe, LA.

Mr. Riser died November 3, 2012 from 4-wheeler injuries sustained while hunting near Paonia, CO, doing what he loved, surrounded by his lifelong friends and family. Buddy was retired from Entergy as a supervisor after 44 years of service.

Estelle Mathewes Harrison

Funeral services for Estelle Mathewes Harrison (Big Mamma, Sis), age 96, of Kingwood TX will be held Friday, November 9, 2012 at Ruston Church of Christ. Officiating the service will be Jim Davis. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
