Trash hauling to cost parish more

It will soon cost the parish a little more to have trash transported for disposal.
During a meeting of the Lincoln Parish Police Jury Solid Waste and Recycling Committee on Tuesday, members voted 5-1 to approve a 5 percent rate increase for hauling contractor Jackie White, Inc.  
The company operates and repairs the landfill pickup station and hauls garbage to the Union Parish Landfill, where it is buried.
Committee Chair Walter Pullen said the parish’s five-year contract with Jackie White Inc. permitted such a request.

Holiday Arts Tour has arrived

The weekend is here, and with it the North Central Louisiana Arts Council’s 15th Annual Holiday Arts Tour. The festivities began last night, with the Main Street Christmas Open House, and will continue through Sunday.
In addition to merchants playing host to the region’s talented artists, several of the stores are offering sales on their own merchandise for the Arts Tour weekend. Those stores inlude The Chartreuse Pear, Rosemary’s Kitchen, Lewis Boutique and Fine Line Art Supply.

American Heritage group visits with ROTC

The American Heritage Girls troop took a trip to the Louisiana Tech University Quad to watch a flag ceremony performed by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).
Finishing up the girls “Our Flag” project, the troop were able to observe how the ROTC handled the flag and the importance of showing respect to the national symbol.

Van De Velde urges big turnout

Louisiana Tech University Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde and other officials are hoping that Tech Nation turns out in large numbers for Saturday’s big game against Utah State.

Tech, Utah State battle for WAC’s top spot

Emotions may play as big a part in who wins Saturday’s collision of the top two teams in the Western Athletic Conference as pure talent and athleticism.
And for sure, the emotional factor could share equal billing with the record-setting seasons of Louisiana Tech University’s Colby Cameron and Kenneth Dixon and Utah State University’s tenacious defense.
This is, after all, not just another game.
This one determines who clinches at least a share of the league championship.

Williams, Whitworth in running for Pro Bowl

Andrew Whitworth is having a Pro Bowl season at offensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals.
So is Kyle Williams at defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills.
Now, it’s up to fans to help the former area high school and LSU stars make it to the NFL’s postseason contest.
Whitworth, an ex-West Monroe High star who is married to the former Melissa Clark of Ruston, is ranked as the third best pass protecting tackle in the league by Profootballfocus and has made the mid-season All-NFL squad selected by the editorial staff of Pro Football Weekly.

Grambling showed grit despite another defeat

GRAMBLING — They lost again last Saturday, but maybe the Tigers of Grambling State University began showing signs of a “turnaround” for their upcoming regular season finale.
That would be on Nov. 24 (1 p.m.) against Southern University and what better time to do it, what with the “Bayou Classic” in New Orleans always being an annual championship-like setting between the two rivals?

Keep working on Sparta relief

Recent information places the overuse of the Sparta Aquifer at approximately 6.61 million gallons per day, which is significantly less than the 18 million gallons per day reported just a few years ago.
This is fantastic news. It means that efforts to save the Sparta are paying off, and we are getting closer to the goal of making sure the Sparta can replenish itself at a reasonable rate. However, nearly 7 million gallons of overuse per day is still a great deal of overuse.
