R and R for area women

Conference set Feb. 9

Area women will have a chance to spend their Saturday hearing a spiritual message during the 16th annual Women’s R and R Conference.
Presented by Concord Union Baptist Association, the conference will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at Cook Baptist Church this year.
Claire Carroll, publicity chairman for the refreshment and renewal conference, said the event is designed to give women an uplifting and encouraging spiritual experience.

Service group to honor vets at annual MLK celebration

In order to recognize the efforts of Martin Luther King and give thanks to those who have served in one of the branches of the United States Armed forces, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Psi Omega Chapter of Grambling will host a Sunday supper for their annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Celebration.
“We always do something every year for our sorority’s MLK Day of Service Celebration. In past years, we have donated school supplies, given food, given coats away or just helped out someone in need,” Annie Hamlin, chapter president, said. “But this is a first for us. We have never done anything of this magnitude.”

Prepare students for testing

From now until the first round of high-stakes testing begins in midMarch, parish teachers and students will be hard at work ensuring they have learned the lessons needed to make the grade.
This year, students will take a variety of tests as they continue the transition to the Common Core State Standards, which will involve its own new assessments.
While teachers and students work during the school day, parents might be wondering what they can do to help their children succeed on these important tests, which could determine whether their child is promoted to the next grade.
