Working to help save babies

The Dubach High School Future Business Leaders of America were recently awarded a $500 grant from the March of Dimes, an organization that rainses funds and awareness to prevent premature births. The funds will be used by to educate citizens throughout Lincoln Parish about March of Dimes through the use of statistics and speaking points provided in the World Prematurity Day Student Guide. Celebrating the award were FBLA members (left to right) Kiera Ellis, Gerdasia Johnson, Lashonda Dies, Quintavious Graham and Abigail Hartwell.

Cedar Creek cheer squads attend camp

The Cedar Creek varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads attended UCA Camp on Aug. 6-9 at Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, Texas. The varsity squad won first place in cheer as well as first place in extreme routine. The junior varsity squad won second place in home pom and first place in extreme routine. Both squads were recognized as superior squads at the camp, and junior varsity cheerleader Elizabeth Guinn earned All-American honors.

Ruston High’s football team is hunting for an October without playing a ranked opponent.
Well, Friday night is definitely out, what with defending state champion West Monroe checking in at L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium for a 7 p.m. District 2-5A battle against the Bearcats.

Nelson: semifinalist for national award

Louisiana Tech University placekicker Matt Nelson has been as one of the 147 candidates for the 2012 National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame National Scholard-Athlete Award presented by Fidelity Investments.
Nelson, a native of Cibolo, Texas, is also on the list of semifinalists for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.

Bettye Joe Crawford Strahan

Funeral services for Mrs. Bettye Joe Crawford Strahan, age 85 of Ruston, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 19, 2012 at Owens Memorial Chapel in Ruston. Reverend Darrell Strahan will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Weldon Cemetery in Bernice under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.
