NATCHITOCHES — It was a winning weekend for the Ruston Daily Leader and Louisiana Tech University as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association held its annual awards banquet Sunday at The Landing Restaurant.
The Daily Leader’s O.K. “Buddy” Davis and T. Scott Boatright each brought home first place awards with Davis taking his fifth straight top honors for Sports Column Writing while Boatright placed first in Headline Writing.
Boatright also took second place in Pro Feature Writing for a story he did on former Grambling State and MLB baseball player Gary Eave.

Women’s hoops legend Pat Summitt dead at 64

The sport of women’s basketball lost a legend this morning as Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history, died at the age of 64.
Summitt led the Tennessee Lady Volunteers to eight national championships in 38 seasons before retiring in 2012 due to early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
Her son, former Louisiana Tech women’s basketball head coach Tyler Summitt, issued a statement this morning saying his mother died peacefully at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most.

Student places in national competition

Local sixth grader takes second runner-up, receives scholarship

Jonathan Gunasekaran placed second runner up out of 39 at the 2016 National You Be The Chemist Challenge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The I.A. Lewis sixth grader received a $2,500 scholarship and a trophy for placing third in the competition.

“I was really happy (to place third),” he said. “I was glad to be one of the top in the nation.”

Green to lead Tech’s Agriculture Sciences and Forestry

William Green, professor of agricultural sciences and interim director of the School of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry at Louisiana Tech University, will assume permanent leadership of the unit as its new director, effective July 1.
Pending approval from the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, Green will take the reins of the newly-formed School, which is part of Tech’s College of Applied and Natural Sciences.
