Cedar Creek leads in rain delay

in

METAIRIE — It didn’t look like St. Martin’s Episcopal could stop Cedar Creek, at least until Mother Nature stepped in.
The Cedar Creek Cougars Class 1A second-round baseball playoff game was postponed in the fifth Saturday as violent storms thundered through the New Orleans area.
Cedar Creek was leading 8-2 in the top of the fifth inning before the storms triggered a long rain delay and eventual postponement of the contest.
The two teams will try to complete the game beginning at 11 a.m. today.

They had to wait until Saturday, but Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon and Jeff Driskel joined fellow Bulldog and first-round selection Vernon Butler as NFL draft picks.
That marks the first time Louisiana Tech has had three players picked in a single draft since 1993, when four Bulldogs were selected, including offensive lineman Willie Roaf in the first round by the New Orleans Saints.
Dixon, a 5-10, 215-pound running back, went in the fourth round to the Baltimore Ravens while Driskel, a 6-4, 234-pound quarterback, is now a San Francisco 49er.

Jerry Byrd: a true legend in sports writing

in
Davis, Buddy 2015.jpg

I am tired of reading obituaries about our friends in the sports writing profession.
The latest: Jerry Barksdale Byrd, the longtime and ever consistent purveyor of all things in sports for Shreveport and later in Minden and Bossier City.
He is the third member and friend in the craft to pass away in just over a year.
Early in 2015, Bobby Dower of the Lake Charles American-Press died after a battle with cancer.
Earlier this month, former New Orleans Times-Picayune scribe Marty Mule passed away following a heart attack.

There’s a strong Lincoln Parish presence on the induction charts for the Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame.
Four of the five representatives are former Louisiana Tech University stars: Eldonta’ Osborne (football), Belinda Jones (basketball), Bobby Stone (football) and Robert Marrus (baseball).
The other honoree is Ricky Peel in basketball.
All will be honored at the shrine’s ninth annual banquet with the date and site to be announced later.

Enjoying nature’s springtime symphony

For the past several weeks, I have been chasing birds. I brought two of them home with me; beards and spurs are drying on the shelf and meat is in the freezer.
I’m a turkey hunter and this is the time of year I look forward to more than any other time. Louisiana’s season ended this past weekend and although it would be fun to chase another gobbler or two, I’m content with what the season afforded me.

Former Louisiana Tech Bulldog and NFL Hall of Fame legend Terry Bradshaw has some strong opinions about domestic violence.

Listeners can tune in to the Q, 94.1 FM at noon Thursday and hear those opinions in an interview with Bob Day that was recorded last month for the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team’s annual Radiothon.
