Tech soccer sets ‘Fun Fest’

in

The Louisiana Tech University soccer program will conduct its third annual “Fun Fest” beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
The extravaganza will officially kick off Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Crescent City Coffee House in Ruston, where soccer alumni, the soccer community, kids and parents can come and meet the Lady Techsters players and staff.
The team will be taking orders and serving drinks with a portion of the proceeds going towards the program’s fundraising efforts.

GSU seasons end

GARLAND, Texas — Both of Grambling State University’s basketball teams had their 2012-13 come to an end Wednesday with losses in the annual Southwestern Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
The Lady Tigers fell to Texas Southern University, 68-56, in an elimination game and the Tigers lost to Alabama A&M 59-51.
In the men’s game, first-year Head Coach Joe Price and the G-Men were trying to avoid going through the season without a win, but finished with an overall record of 0-28.
Guard Terry Rose was the top scorer for Grambling with 22 points.

Martha Chandler McMichael

Funeral services for Martha Chandler McMIchael, age 72, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Ruston, will be at 2:00 PM Friday, March 15, 2013 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Rev. Brad Jones will be officiating the service. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston, LA.

Martha was born to Milton and Lillian Chandler in Ruston, Louisiana on December 17, 1940. She was a graduate of Ruston High School. Martha was married to Claude L. McMichael on November 4, 1960 and was married for 52 years.

Principals to take on new roles

The leadership of three local schools will be quite different when the 2013-14 school year begins.
At the beginning of the upcoming school year I.A. Lewis principal Sonja Walker and Ruston Elementary School principal Shavonne Garner-Price will be swapping places. Additionally, Ruston High School principal Mike Milstead will become a member of the central office staff. The announcement was made at Tuesday night’s Lincoln Parish School Board meeting.

Great American Clean up

It’s nearly time for spring cleaning, and local residents are slated to make sure all of the shared living space is in tip top shape next month as well.
Residents will gather at 8 a.m. April 6 in Railroad Park to participate in the Great American Clean Up as part of the efforts of Keep Lincoln Parish Beautiful.
“All of us want to live in a clean environment,” Camille Mize, with Keep Lincoln Parish Beautiful, said. “And, in order to do that we sometimes have to help by cleaning up the litter.”

Tech earns national recognition

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has named Louisiana Tech University to its 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for leadership among institutions of higher education in Louisiana in supporting volunteerism, service-learning and community involvement.
Tech is the only public university in north Louisiana and the only institution in the University of Louisiana System to have made the Honor Roll every year since 2008.

Ruston club presents Jolis Jardin — a Garden Tour

The days are longer, the temperatures are a bit milder and gardens throughout the area are becoming lush and green with a variety color. Spring is swiftly approaching and the Ruston Garden Club wants to usher in the scenic season by hosting Jolis Jardin — a Garden Tour from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. April 27.
Along with the three selected home gardens, the Lincoln Parish Visitor’s Center will feature vendors with handcrafted items, herbs and potted plants.

Holtz visits with Rotary

He talked about moving to Ruston, recruiting and the direction he was going to take the team. He also answered questions about returning players.
