Revamping Choudrant

Village may begin sidewalk project this year

If all goes as Mayor Bill Sanderson would hope, the Village of Choudrant should be much more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically-pleasing by the time residents ring in 2014.
Sanderson said the village has been working since 2006 on a revitalization project, similar to the one Ruston has been doing for the past few years.
Riley Company, a local engineering consultancy firm, recently submitted the design for the project to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

Lending kids a hand

Ruston City Council votes to give local club $50K

Ruston City Council members took action on Monday that will allow the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana to receive a funding boost.
The city has an annual agreement with the club where it agrees to allow the club use of certain facilities, pay all utility bills, provide all grounds maintenance and give $30,000 to be used by the club with the administration of programs and services.
Located on Memorial Drive, the club offers after-school programs and summer camps for local children.

Soccer sign-up deadline approaching

Children who dream of running down the field dribbling a soccer ball will have their chance as spring soccer begins in mid-February.
While the games won’t start until Feb. 16, the deadline to sign up is quickly approaching.
Ashlynn Shell, Ruston Parks and Recreation recreation supervisor, said those interested in playing the sport this season have until 5 p.m. Jan. 25 to become a part of the action.

Jindal proposes nixing income tax

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing to eliminate Louisiana’s personal and business income taxes in exchange for higher state sales taxes and the removal of some tax breaks currently on the books. The ideas are the centerpiece of the governor’s planned tax code rewrite for the next legislative session.
Jindal’s shopping the tax swap to lawmakers, who will consider it in the regular session that begins in April. He described the proposal Thursday as a way to save Louisiana families money and make the state more appealing to business and industry.

‘Come and See’ the show, with opening reception tonight

Louisiana Tech University’s Enterprise Center Gallery presents “Come and See: An MFA Show.” The exhibition will run fromFriday until Feb. 15, with the opening reception from 6-8 p.m.tonight. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Shrinking height with age

For as long as I can remember, I have been wearing the same jean and pant length. The proper word here is inseam.
After a few recent wardrobe rotations of blue jeans, my cuff length appears to be growing longer than my legs. I’m still wearing the same number on the little white tab inside, but I don’t know, apparently the area code is incorrect or something.

The importance of Braille

Jan. 4 marked the birthday of Louis Braille, the Frenchman blinded as a child who developed the Braille code, a completely tactile reading medium. His system continues to transform the lives of blind people around the world today. I reflected on what Braille means to me and how important it is that we continue educating others about its importance to all blind people, particularly to those with residual vision.

Louisiana Tech University’s Lady Techsters seized the moment on Thursday night.
But only after achieving “The Moment.”
Leading into the Western Athletic Conference game against Texas State University (6-9, 0-5) at the Thomas Assembly Center, no way you would have gotten an idea about its special significance.
At least not from the Techsters or their Hall of Fame head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon.
