Tech’s Debate Team kicks into high gear

“(The team) sounds like they know what they’re talking about, and they look like they know what they’re talking about,” Gibson said. “My debaters literally have to be a jack-of-all-trades. We’ve been to debates where the topics range from Britney Spears and K-Fed to Iraq policies to who’s going to be the next president to genetic foods. The good thing is that we’ve got a good diversity with people from different majors.”

Tech bowlers rolling with success

Oh yes, the bowling team.
With the 2006 portion of its schedule completed, the Shawn Jackson-coached crew has won well over 20 matches, enjoys a top 15 national ranking and has high hopes of possibly earning a berth in postseason competition before their alley battles are over in mid-March.
Best of all, this could very well be the foundation for a program that could eventually take off in a big way, a la the famed Lady Techsters’ basketballers did back in the mid-1970’s.

Kiwanis offer outlet for teen talent

The Ruston Kiwanis Club might help make this vision a reality with their Youth Festival and Talent Show. Applications are already being accepted for local students in grades 9-12 who wish to compete for $200, $100 and $50 cash prizes by submitting artwork or displaying their talents at a contest at the Dixie Center for the Arts on Feb. 10.
Art entries can include anything from paintings and photography to sculptures and wood work. The talent competition is open to singers, musicians, comedians and actors, to name a few.

Recalling life of a local artist

In 2004, I came into contact with this mild-mannered artist as he was putting the finishing touches on his “Laundromat series,” to be displayed in the art tour. These were paintings that depicted real people he had observed in everyday settings over a 10-year-period.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to do this series,” Kennedy told me.
“Before I went back to school, I was a carpenter and a house painter, and I went to many Laundromats. I would sketch people there, who usually did not know I was drawing them.”

Plans to develop library space continues

Williams’ request comes on the heels of a meeting last week between members of the Library Board of Control, the Police Jury and the Ruston-Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau. The architect, once hired, will meet with members of the Police Jury, Board of Control, CVB, city of Ruston, Louisiana Tech and any other agency that might use the new facilities. The architect would then come up with a plan that meets as many needs as possible.

Identity theft a holiday threat

Shoppers need to keep track of property and take care to keep up with any papers such as receipts or electronically-submitted checks that might have sensitive information on them.
Identity thieves also use a number of different tactics to elicit personal information over the phone and Internet. Any one who receives a call or e-mail from someone attempting to get account numbers, passwords, etc. should take extra steps to ensure it is a legitimate request. Personal information should never be given if there is any doubt that everything is on the up-and-up.

Techsters try to halt loss streak

Back on Nov. 25 against Lincoln Parish neighbor Grambling State, 70-50.
Since then, there’s been losses of 71-50 to Tennessee, 74-59 to Arizona, 64-61 to Kansas State and, just last weekend, a 58-54 finale versus I-20 pest Louisiana-Monroe.
Thus, the Techsters (2-7) could use a confidence-building transfusion on the road tonight when they meet up with Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State in Starkville starting at 7.

Please come home for Christmas

Three people died, and several others were airlifted to Shreveport with life-threatening injuries.
Those are some scary numbers, especially considering that two people were younger than me and the third was only a few years past 30.
Believe me, the further I get into my 20s, the younger 30 is beginning to look.
I’m sure they all had plans, dreams and goals — things they wanted to accomplish before they died.
As with these wrecks, and the easy dozen that flit across the police scanner on my desk each day, I wonder about the moment before that last decision.

Two area men arrested on DWI charges

Jerry Lewis, chief public education officer for the Ruston Fire Department, said two ambulances and a rescue unit were sent to the scene but neither driver was transported.
Capt. Wesley Harris, public information officer with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office, said the wreck occurred around 1 p.m. near La. 3072’s intersection with U.S. 167; state police worked the wreck.
Harris said while the area’s accident rate has remained about the same, there has been a big increase in people injured in collisions.
