Proposed Sparta bill creates waves

Currently, nine of the 19-member commission fit that bill. If HB 65 passes as filed, nine agencies could be without representation until Gov. Kathleen Blanco appoints their replacements.
Fannin’s second Sparta bill, HB 66, would have the commission’s quarterly meeting rotated among the 16 parishes identified as being part of the Sparta Aquifer, instead of at the commission’s domicile, as the law currently states.
During last year’s regular legislative session, Fannin filed HB 388 which made it more difficult to receive a critical designation for the rapidly depleting Sparta Sands.

Road to cleanliness not so long

This past Saturday, Louisiana Tech’s Student Government Association held their annual Big Event, a day dedicated to community service through a variety of jobs, ranging from picking up trash to raking leaves.
About 60 organizations and 1,100 students participated in the day-long event.
It is encouraging to see the youth show up in such numbers to help beautify our community.
The city of Ruston also witnessed the importance of cleanliness when they readied for the district Cleanest City Contest held earlier this week.

Enter the classroom battlefield

Since that time I’ve come into contact with many people who chose this profession and discovered buying feet-friendly shoes for long-term standing is the least of their concerns. These are people who are challenged every single day to act as role models. For eight hours — or more if they volunteer as activity advisors — these men and women must pay careful attention to their choice of wording, tone of voice and body language.

Bulldogs extend win streak to six

Now 17-12, the Bulldogs boosted their winning streak to six games entering a crucial Western Athletic Conference series against Nevada here this weekend; action begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and follows with 3 and 1 p.m., contests on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Tech showed plenty of grit and determination in defeating the Ragin’ Cajuns (16-12), given that so much emotion was spent in the amazing comeback against top five nationally ranked State.

Bills would further dilute Sparta

The current Act for the Sparta Groundwater Commission was established at the call of the Governor with a directive to meet at its established domicile. The Act also directed the commission to establish its domicile within the district. This directive doesn’t sit well with Fannin, who believes he knows better than the people appointed by the Governor to the Sparta Groundwater Commission. It’s a direct attempt to further dilute the volunteer board so their voice and opinions will not jeopardize the political agenda of Fannin.

Dogs shock #5 Mississippi State

Talk about cooking up a huge win, but Tech (16-12) did it, rallying for seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to shock the Starkville Bulldogs 13-12.
It was one of the biggest comeback victories in the Ruston Bulldogs’ history, particularly significant because of their opponent. The Staters were the No. 1 ranked club in the entire nation last week, based on votes cast for Baseball America, and were still listed no lower than five when this week’s polls were announced on Monday afternoon.
