Expert: Service helps students

Foos gave the example of students volunteering in the community for a poetry class.
“Poetry springs from the heart,” she said. “If students are out in the community teaching poetry to eighth-grade inner city students, they would have experiences they would not have to write about otherwise.”
Foos’ visit was part of the Louisiana Campus Compact’s series designed to help faculty members develop courses with service components.
Valerie Fields, the director of LCC, said many organizations were looking for collegiate volunteers.

Creek’s White goes out in style

The senior outfielder collected three hits in four at bats, two of ‘em being doubles, and drove in two runs to help boost Creek to a 4-3 victory and qualification for the LHSAA’s annual state tournament.
It was just the type of gut-check, clutch performance that White became known for throughout her brilliant career, one that is now capped off with her being selected as Miss Softball on The Daily Leader 2006 All-Lincoln Parish squad.

Save Sparta under the sun

When washing you car, don’t let the water run constantly; either turn it off while you’re applying soap or use a spray nozzle on the end of the hose. You might think the amount of water you save is insignificant, but you’d be surprised how quickly that total adds up during the course of a year.

Radio ‘talking head’ should stick to sports

But Friday, one of the ESPN talking heads crossed the line. No, he didn’t take pot shots at my beloved New York Yankees or condemn one of my heroes. What Colin Cowherd did was much worse.
If you happened to miss the final 45 minutes of his show Friday, Cowherd spent that time explaining why the city of New Orleans should be left in a heap and not rebuilt.

Katrina funds in good hands

From the local funds there is a remainder of $9,324 which has now been donated to the Red Cross as the contributors were told would be done if there were any funds left.
“Before there was time for any structured type of relief effort, generous people just started trying to help,” said Mickey Mays, the Lincoln Parish Police Jury president during the disaster. “We opened the Ruston Civic Center basically because it seemed to be our only option at the time.
