Leadership opportunities abundant

On Aug. 9-11, qualifying will take place for the upcoming mayoral and school board elections, scheduled for Sept. 30. Area citizens in Ruston, Choudrant, Downsville, Grambling, Simsboro and Dubach have the opportunity to step forward and announce their candidacy for mayor or the school board if one feels he or she can do a better job.
Qualifying will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m., Aug. 9 and will end Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Clerk of Courts office, which closes at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10.

Raise your paw if you’re blue

On the surface, “R U Blue?” is a marketing ploy meant to remind Louisiana Tech fans to wear the color on game day and to make Joe Aillet Stadium a sea of blue on Saturdays.
However, blue has had and could have additional tie-ins with the Louisiana Tech Bulldog football team. Let me explain.

Louisiana Tech student takes his own life

“The last time he was registered as a student was the winter quarter of 2005-2006,” Crawford said. “Even though he was not a registered student, he was still living in the fraternity house.”
Ruston Police Department Lt. Curtis Hawkins confirmed his office was investigating an apparent suicide at the SAE house.
“We are investigating what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Hawkins said.

Tech, GSU: ‘Bayou’ flavor

Both teams, though, have their share of out-of-state products and among them stretching from East-to-West coast.
Eleven different states are represented on the Tech roster.
Grambling will have players from 14 different states scheduled to report in for fall workouts.
The next highest represented state among Bulldogs’ members is Texas with 17, while Mississippi closely follows with 13.
Alabama and New Jersey have two products each and with one each are Mississippi, Georgia, Oklahoma, Maryland and Tennessee.

Hastert visits parish

“I understand he had a very serious procedure,” Hastert said. “Just the fact that he’s named Raul (Fidel Castro’s brother) as his successor is substantive. The press says he’s recovering. I know a lot of Cuban Americans are jubilant and that some members of Congress want change in Cuba. We need to be cautious about Castro’s recent discussions with Chavez in Venezuela — they might send their military to assist Cuba.”
