Head off gifting anxiety

With all of the cooking, decorating and partying going on, it’s hard to imagine time to pick out a most desired gift for each member of your inner circle. During this time of gift-giving, our families can seem over-abundant with good little boys and girls, and shopping for our friends can become an unexpected source of the holiday blues. This time of year that’s supposed to be filled with good cheer often brings with it a heavy load of anxiety.

City departments find common ground

The construction of two more buildings is planned in the next few years — one for a warehouse and one to house the Light and Power Department.
“We’ve been working on this since 2004, and now we’re in the building process,” Love said. “The idea is to consolidate all of these into one location over time. It will be easier if they are all managed together and grow together instead of being separated.”
Equipment sharing is already being practiced among the departments, and many projects involve a collaboration of the various types of expertise.

Creek team sparks pride

The team has much to be proud of, and they’ve given Ruston much to be proud of. This group of guys has shown their heart out on the field and in their everyday activities. The community noticed, and they turned out in force to show their Creek pride on Friday night.
Driving on Interstate 20 from Ruston to Monroe on Friday afternoon, I passed handmade banners of support for the Cougars. As I got closer to Ouachita Christian School, the number of signs increased, and there was no doubt about the fan support the Cougars
would have at the game.

Community’s protection is up to all of us

That’s reassuring news for Ruston residents, many of whom loaded up this weekend with Christmas gifts and other valuables.
Our community should take pride in the police officers and investigators who have worked to find the culprits in these crimes. Because our city is so safe, this series of armed robberies has put many of us on edge.
Two of the recent robberies happened at convenience stores, and three local residences have been struck.

RJHS soccer program blooming

An integral part of the local soccer scene in Ruston for many years, Acosta was ready to see the sport explode at RJHS.
“Soccer is a unique sport to this part of the world because of how it’s played,” Acosta explains. “Most popular sports here all key on the upper body. Look at football, baseball, and even basketball. These sports are very “arm” oriented. But not soccer.

GSU fans head to ‘Big Easy’

He played under the late Eddie Robinson in the mid-1970’s, being chosen twice to the all-league team as a defensive end and then being selected by the New York Giants in 1974.
Bibbs is also the owner of U-Save Auto Rental in Ruston.
In the weeks, even months, leading up to the “Classic,” business has been extra brisk and an accurate barometer of the large number of fans who will be making the trek southward this weekend.

GSU, Southern clash Saturday

Nor does it matter that Grambling and Southern have already guaranteed themselves winning records after losing more than they won in 2006.
Remember, it’s all about “bragging laurels” when these two long-time rivals bump into each other on the gridiron.
“It’s like a championship game for both schools,” said quarterback Brandon Landers of Grambling about the 1 p.m. meeting at the Louisiana Superdome. “Whoever wins this game can go back home feeling good because the other team will have to wait a whole year before they play again.”

Covenants can protect subdivisions

Restrictive covenants are written when a residential area is first developed; otherwise, every landowner in the neighborhood must vote to instate a covenant after the initial development.
Existing covenants generally contain language explaining the procedure for making amendments, which usually requires the approval of a certain percentage of property owners.
In general, these documents are written so that they automatically renew themselves if no changes are made after a certain period of time.

Farmers' Christmas wish

“Without a farm bill approved by Christmas, the House-Senate Farm Bill Conference Committee would be forced to consider it in January 2008,” said Brian Breaux, associate commodity director for the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation. “With very few legislative days in the month of January, this would delay the House and Senate vote on the farm bill until February.
For many producers, he said, that’s just too late.

Community celebrates holiday

Married for 55 years, Hill said he is preparing his first Thanksgiving meal.
“I’ll just get half of a turkey because I don’t like turkey that much,” he said.
Lynda Henderson is spending Thanksgiving dining with her husband’s family, but with a broken hand, she will probably not be helping out in the kitchen. Marriage and life itself are among her biggest thanks. The Lincoln Parish School Board member recalls an event about 1 ½ years ago that reminded her of the preciousness of time spent with her husband.
“My husband, Joseph, came through a serious illness,” she said.
