’Cats cruise past Homer at ‘Classic’

Other second day results in the “Classic” included Bastrop defeating Shreveport University Prep 53-44 in the boys’ division and Bossier City Airline High winning over Madison Parish 44-36 and Natchitoches Central halting Monroe Carroll 57-36 in the girls’ division.
Kobe Clemons had 28 points, Louisiana Tech University signee Josh Brown 18 points, Davion Spivey 14 points and Donovan Price 10 points to pace the Bearcats to their victory.
Bryant Grant and Terrance Webb had 12 points each as the top scorers for Homer.

Heritage of dog-fighting should end

First of all, the dog isn’t given a choice. Proponents compare it to boxing or organized man-on-man combat that is publicly consumed at an incredible rate in every civilized corner of the word. The fatal flaw in that argument: Nobody asked the dog.
The law views it that simply, and we as citizens of a larger society governed by the rule of law must abide by the edict that dog-fighting is illegal and punishable by fines and jail-time.
State law prohibits:
• For amusement or gain, causing any dog to fight with another dog or causing any dogs to injure each other.

Farmers excited about 2008

In a year that saw the election of a new governor, a new commissioner of agriculture and the start of a new farm bill, things have been pretty topsy-turvy legislatively as well, Anderson said.
“We’ve got a real opportunity,” he said. “We’ve got a new governor, and we know he cares about farmers.

Library expansion takes off

The event center will be built into 22,000 square feet of surplus space attached to the 39,000 square feet of existing library, McCain said.
It is proposed to house a 300-seat auditorium with moveable walls to accommodate three breakout rooms, a foyer, a connecting corridor to the existing library that will accommodate small exhibits, storage, a genealogy and local history center and three additional study rooms, as well as an exhibit area.
Costs of the project are unknown at this point, McCain said, and will be until plans are finalized, which could take well into 2008.
