Help quell the hunger

• Securing food and providing it to partner agencies that feed the hungry;
• Fostering public awareness; and
• Managing direct distribution programs.
Its goal is one that everyone can support: A hunger free northeast Louisiana.
To accomplish its mission and goal, the NELA Food Bank depends on volunteers and the support of those who live throughout northeast Louisiana — including area businesses.

Cultural exposure is here

Travel is my passion. Anyone who comes to my house would know that from the dozen pieces of world memorabilia sprinkled on every surface of my bedroom. I have six wooden monkeys linked together that hang from my curtain rod, two small watercolor paintings of the tranquil Serbian countryside and a gorgeous black belly dancing scarf complete with shiny rows of silver coins from Egypt, to name only a few. The most noticeable feature of the room by far is the large world map containing the “infamous” colored tacks which mark where I have been and where I would like to go.

‘Her story’ voiced at GSU convocation

The Tennessee native also instructed those in attendance to look to God to “order their steps” so they could do great things by helping others achieve great things, referring to actions that sparked the Civil Rights movement.
“It was young people who touched the very conscience of America … and now the same torch has been passed on to you,” she said. “Young people, it’s on you.”
Following the theme of the event, coordinated by the Office of Campus Activities and Favrot Student Union, Glover was presented as an example of generations of women moving history forward.

Jackson could keep foes on run

Last year, Jackson shot holes in the ol’ “sophomore jinx” theory by leading the Bulldogs and ranking in the top 10 for the Western Athletic Conference for ground gaining with 854 yards and seven touchdowns on 170 carries.
He was also one of the league’s most dangerous kick returners, racing back 29 kicks for 702 yards, a 24.2 average and a touchdown (that one being the first for the program since the 1990s).
So can Patrick Jackson advanced his numbers to an even greater, more meaningful degree for the 2007 season?

Watch a game, save newborns

Grambling State University is also stepping up to support the cause. Several of the school’s organizations will host activities this week to raise money for the March of Dimes. Establishing a goal of $3,000 for the university, the Student Government Association is accepting donations from both students and community members. Today, students in the male and female dormitories will compete against each other to see who can raise the most donations in “Battle of the Sexes.” Tonight from 5-7:20 p.m., students will perform in the “Eighth Annual Sidewalk Show,” in front of the men’s gymnasium.

Stroll by as tomatoes fly

The boy, appearing embarrassed and caught off guard, pointed to the driver and said, “Oh, that was him. He just always does that.”
On another occasion, he followed a carload of shouting young men to a fraternity house. After stepping off of his bicycle, he strolled up and knocked on the door. When a young man answered, my father pointed to the vehicle he had pursued and asked if the driver was there.

G-Men could have right mix

“We’re going to try and score as many points as we can by any way we can and we’re going to try and do it as often as we can,” said the first-year Tigers’ head coach who will send his squad into the annual “Black vs. Gold” spring game at Robinson Stadium on Saturday (11 a.m.).. “That’s what we believe in and that’s what we hopefully will be able to do.”
That should suit Grambling State fans just fine.
They’ve become accustomed to high-powered, lofty ranked NCAA Division 1-AA and Southwestern Athletic Conference offensive teams over the years.

Defend yourself from theft

• Taking steps to protect your personal identification. While many people carry a variety of things with them, including Social Security cards and rarely used credit cards, this could pose a problem if a purse or wallet were stolen. To cut down the risk of being a victim, such information should be protected; for everyday activities, carry only necessary items with you such as driver’s license and emergency credit card.

Dreamgirls awaken thoughts

I’ve covered dozens of pageants in my journalistic career, particularly in Union Parish, which seems to have another festival every time you turn around. But this one was different, I guess because I had gotten to know some of the girls a little bit. When the time came to announce the winner, I could barely hear because my heart was beating so loudly. I can only imagine what their nerves were doing, although each one presented a picture of perfect poise.
