Peach Festival begins today

“We’ve learned over the years that people in this area like a little bit of everything,” Bergeron said. “The music taste in this area is pretty eclectic. It makes it pretty easy because we can look at a variety of folks who do a variety of music. We try to choose music and entertainment that people like.”
Sony Burgess and the Pacers, an act out of Arkansas, will perform, as well as the Buddy Terzia Band and festival headliner and award-winner Percy Sledge, who will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday.

Aldredge seeking junior honors

The daughter of Cedar Creek head football coach Corwyn Aldredge has consistently thrown in the 135-foot range throughout the spring and this summer and will be a major contender for a title this weekend.
The Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-State member of the past two years had the longest throw of any classification at this year’s Louisiana High School Athletic Association state meet, ending up with a mark of 135-4.
Aldredge was also No. 1 at the District 2-1A meet at 138-0 and tops at the regional 1-A meet with a throw of 123-6.

My rocky relationship with sun

Unfortunately, my sun smarts did not last. Around 18, I gave into the temptation to be tan and visited a tanning bed periodically. After about a year, the effects of the tanning process were visible in the form of increased freckles and dry skin.
My mother tried to change my tanning habits by warning me that skin cancer runs in our family, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning booths increases the risk of skin cancer. I brushed off her warnings. I was young and immortal.

State, national tests a mismatch

Proficiency means working at the expected grade level for a given grade.
Sterling Lloyd, a research associate with Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, said this gap between how a state’s students are shown to perform on the national test versus their individual state tests is not uncommon.
“Many researchers and policy makers think it is important to compare NAEP to state tests as a way of having an independent check on the rigor of state tests because the NAEP is considered to be a high quality, rigorous assessment,” Lloyd said.

Cool down vehicle problems

• When driving in hot weather, it is particularly important to keep an eye on the lights and gauges. If your temperature gauge moves up, turn off your air conditioner and turn on the heater to its highest setting. It will be uncomfortable, but it will help draw some of the heat away from your engine.
• If you are stopped in traffic, put the car in park and lightly step on the gas to help circulate coolant.

Bobby's rolling in the blues

Those congregated there shared about an hour of praise, testimony and song. It reminded me a lot of the church I attended when I was younger — a spirited group who, at times, seemed to shake the rafters with the very volume of their hymns.
One of my favorite events of the Juneteenth celebration last year was the all-star softball game — an endeavor that, for the most part, didn’t allow the rigidity of rules to interfere with a perfectly good time. I’m not sure if this year’s participants were disappointed or relieved when inclement weather caused a cancellation.

Spending cap break fails

Rep. John Alario, who as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee handles most budget bills, said the surplus spending measure would make key investments in ports, roads, colleges and economic development.
“This provides for a future for Louisiana,” said Alario, D-Westwego.
GOP House members say Blanco and Democratic lawmakers want to plug too much new money into new, ongoing programs the state can’t afford in later years, and they want more money spent on tax breaks than the Blanco administration and Democratic lawmakers are supporting.
