Simsboro OK’d for LA 4

Although Lincoln Center, Ruston Elementary and Hico School already have pre-k programs in place, they differ from LA 4 in that they do not require school aftercare and transportation as does LA 4.
“We are always happy to be able to add another pre-k program in our district,” Lincoln Parish Schools Superintendent Danny Bell said.
“We are moving forward with LA 4 in anticipation it will provide a good education for those in the Simsboro community.”

Millsaps: a summer of ‘Jazz’

Enter: John Millsap.
While Paul is leading the entire Revue league in field goal percentage (.762) and blocked shots per game (2.50) and in the top seven of two other major statistical departments, his older brother is also on the roster after having turned down an offer back in February to put in time with the Los Angeles Lakers’ summer team.

Everyone urged to heed rules of road

Another telling statistic is that those most often responsible for the accidents usually escape relatively unscathed. Such was the case in Saturday’s accident, when the motorist cited by Troop F troopers received only minor injuries.
As summer passes the halfway point and the beginning of a new school year nears, there will be even more traffic on our roadways as people take one last trip before fall. It is important that we take special care as we travel the nation’s highways. We need to make sure that we follow the rules of the road: don’t speed or tailgate, and wear a safety belt.

Ruston still has big heart

However, every day people surprise me with how much they can give of themselves. Especially when caring is not required and the people are beyond that core group of people, such as family and friends, that have already proven they deserve attention.
I happened to be out of the country when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit; so while most of our state was living those horrors first hand, I had to hear everything through the British news. But, we did hear news every day. Even the British people wanted to get involved in helping our state through that time.

Burglary suspect linked to murder

“It’s unlikely we’ll be able to extradite him,” Harris said. “He’s facing a much more serious charge in Texas.”
McCollough, a retired Air Force colonel, flew combat missions as an F-4 pilot in Vietnam and served as deputy commander of now-closed Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock before his murder.
One specific instance connected to Lewis was a Feb. 14 burglary at a home off of Beacon Light Road in Ruston.
Lewis was tracked via a license plate number the victim managed to take down, sheriff’s deputies said.

Henderson: a new challenge

But in terms of making the transition from former principal at Ruston High School to the commissioner’s seat for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, Henderson considers it as “continuing education.
“It’s an ongoing learning experience,” Henderson said during a recent interview held here with sportswriters from throughout the state at the annual Louisiana Sports Writers Association convention.
“Any time you go into a different challenge or profession, it’s about learning things from those around you and those who have preceded you.

Give gift of school preparation

The poster, a take-off of DART’s Angel Tree program that calls for donations of Christmas gifts, contains a paper doll cutout that lists the needs of local children who are involved with DART. To maintain the children’s confidentiality, the cutouts are coded to correspond to the individual child. Donations can be made by claiming a paper doll and returning it to Curves, located at 975 Tech Drive Suite 7, and DART’s downtown office on Alabama Avenue.

You get what you give

A trip to Alpine Guest Care Center led me to meet Pete and Willa Peterson, a couple who periodically go to the center to bring treats for and visit with the center’s residents. Mrs. Peterson’s mother was once a guest at the center, but even since her passing, the Petersons still take it upon themselves to treat each of Alpine’s residents as a personal friend or family member. They bring gifts of cookies, cakes and other snacks, and provide comforting presents on Christmas.

RHS grad gains second star

“We’ve had a great run over the past couple of years,” Cartwright said to a crowd that included family, friends and co-workers. “Anytime Jack was ever given a mission, he completed it. He did that all over this country.”
Ramsaur said he was “very honored, blessed and humbled” by the promotion.
He ran through a laundry list of people who helped him reach his position as an Air Force major general. As he ran down the list, Ramsaur ran the gamut of emotions from laughter to near tears. He especially became emotional when speaking about his family.

T.J., Jordan: grand finales

Nicholson, as a senior pitcher for Ruston High, had a 7-5 record and 2.49 earned run average. Both of those marks are extra deceiving, the fact being that the righthander suffered five of those setbacks to top 10 Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association top 10 ranked opponents. But in District 1-5A action, he went 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA.
Such performances earned Brister and Nicholson two of the individual awards and a first unit slot on the annual All-Parish squad selected by The Daily Leader.
Brister was tabbed as the Hitter of the Year and Nicholson as the Pitcher of the Year.
