School test scores released

In 2007, fourth and eighth graders had to score at least Basic in either the English or math portion of the LEAP and at least Approaching Basic in the other to be promoted to the next grade. High school students taking the GEE were required to score Approaching Basic or above in math and English and Approaching Basic or above in either science or social studies to be eligible to graduate.
The state’s goal is for all students to achieve Basic or above by 2014.

Tech, GSU set to report

Louisiana Tech University has its initial reporting date for Sunday before two-a-days begin Monday.
Both teams will be gearing up for 2007 openers on Sept. 1, the ‘Dogs set to host the University of Central Arkansas and the Tigers heading to Lorman, Miss., to tackle Alcorn State.
The Bulldogs and Tigers will have more in common than just trying to bounce back from three-victory totals from the 2006 campaign.
They’ve both got new head coaches.

At Tech, it’s all happening

Tech President Dan Reneau told the crowd at the Happening what they all knew already: Tech had an outstanding year in 2007. It’s easy to see why. It’s hard not to crow too loudly.
Seemingly every year for Tech is so, but this year it moved up among the ranks of institutions in the south to a Doctoral II research tier.
The Southern Regional Education Board, an organization of 16 southern states, saw fit to recognize the sweeping change and strong growth so readily apparent to those of us in Lincoln Parish.

Shots needed for school

Infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; so it is critical they are protected through immunization. And, children who are not immunized increase the chance that others will get a disease that could have been prevented by a vaccine.
It is important to remember vaccinations as we prepare our children to return to school. New clothes or school uniforms; paper, pencils glue and scissors; and a backpack are all back-to-school essentials. So, too, are shots.

Merchants set for tax holiday

Some items not eligible for the tax holiday are vehicles that must be licensed or titled, prepared meals and to-go foods. It will also not apply to purchases of taxable services such as the following: hotel rooms; amusement, recreational and athletic admissions; repairs to tangible personal property; laundry, cleaning, pressing and dyeing services; vehicle parking; the furnishing of cold storage space; printing services; and telecommunication services.
