Creek gymnastics making big leaps

Scratch meant finding a place to practice as well as some basic equipment to work with.
And Cecil wasn’t afraid to get creative.
“We began with a cookie dough fund-raiser and the girls raised more than $6,000 doing that,” Cecil proudly reflects.  “Then I used that money and got on E-bay to find things that we could order and work with.  One of the parents recalled some sort of gymnastics program at the school more than 20 years ago so we rummaged through the P.E. storage area and found three beams that were still in good shape.

Tech plugs away at construction

Also on tap is a new track surface, replacing the current, worn-out blue track that sits along Tech Drive. Tech building official Tom Sisemore said that surface was quite old, and
the replacement was more than overdue.
“I think it’s great, it’s going to help our programs tremendously,” he said. “From a competition standpoint and recruiting standpoint, it’s something that we desperately need.”
Bids for the project open Jan. 25, Sisemore said. Crawford said that project will hopefully wrap by the end of this summer.

Tech hopes to ‘Pack the House’

An early indicator of just how the battle for a WAC crown might develop could be established Saturday night at the Thomas Assembly Center, where Tech (7-8, 1-1) and Boise State (8-5, 0-1) meet in a 7 p.m. game billed as a “Pack the House” challenge; it’s part of an NCAA/WAC promotion whereby schools compete against each other to fill up their arenas for a conference game.

Grambling plans facelift for downtown

These are good steps, but tourism dollars aren’t growing, and the town will be fighting tooth and nail with the myriad tourist attractions in north Louisiana and the country on the whole to try and tie some dollars down for the town’s coffers.

Two die in morning crashes

At approximately 5:35 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle on fire with the driver trapped inside, he said. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
“It was a late model Dodge Charger that was fully engulfed in fire,” Sanderson said.
No information about the driver’s identity could be released at press time because police were still notifying family.
According to Mark Dennis, LSP Troop F public affairs officer, a second fatal accident occurred on La. 33 at the intersection of 3072, north of Ruston, at approximately 6 a.m.

United Way tax program provides help

Worse is not filing at all. Don’t believe that a system that has been used as a way to put notorious gangsters behind bars is incapable of finding the little needle in the haystack — the average person who does not have taxes removed from their pay for the work they do.
The Internal Revenue Service is a mammoth organization watching over the execution of a Herculean task. They make a living on making sure we are making a living they can tax.

Both parties talk religion

There have been various attempts to paint this group as a bunch of right-wing extremists, Bible-thumping, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals, or “largely poor, uneducated, and easy to command.” But when researchers focused on ordinary evangelicals, “they [found] more diversity, complexity and ambivalence than conventional wisdom would lead us to expect.”

Techsters bounce Idaho, 61-39

“When you’re struggling on offense, you had better play better on defense and rebound good and we did that tonight,” said Long, the third-year head coach at Tech. “I was pleased with our effort defensively and in rebounding and, really, our overall play.
“In the first half, we didn’t attack their half court trap well and we missed some shots, but I thought we did a better job in the second half.”
