Scientists say Sparta is still shrinking

"The bottom line is there's no reason for water levels overall to rise; there has been no decline in usage," Magee said. "With some exceptions."
The area's amount of fresh water is still declining, and areas in the eastern edges of the aquifer's coverage are beginning to see their wells pumping salty brine that is encroaching into the underground sand reservoir, Magee said.

Banquet celebrates family literacy

Mistress of Ceremonies Dee Scallan, an educator and children’s book author from Monroe, described how literacy has the power to change lives.
“When children can read, they can do anything in the world,” Scallan said. “Even Start gives parents the opportunity to be productive, tax-paying citizens.”
Even Start aims to improve the educational opportunities of low-income families and is free to participants. Early childhood education is provided for children ages birth to 8 years old, and parents enrolled in the adult education program have the opportunity to earn a GED.

Art Tour opens

Kavanaugh describes her designs as colorful, whimsical, retro and as being influenced by the 1950s and Austin, Texas, style. Some of her depictions include sock monkeys and cowboy boots.
In the past, Kavanaugh was primarily a watercolorist.
“I’ve grown up around (art),” she said. “It’s something I’ve always done.”
Fifteen years ago, she said, American Masters Associated printed her work as limited edition prints and distributed them nationwide. She has also made a business of faux-finishing walls.

’Dogs have bowl berth in sight

It’s also something that isn’t lost on second-year boss Derek Dooley and his team as they go for a fifth home win in as many tries in the 1:30 p.m. meeting.
“One of our goals at the start of the season was to become eligible for a bowl and we can do it by winning Saturday,” Dooley said. “But we can’t do it by just talking about it. We were in this same position last year and got blown out by Nevada (49-10) in the last game of the season.
“Hopefully, we’ve learned how to manage the situation better this time.”

Commandments vs. aphorisms

A short answer: They are the seven divine principles of something called the Summum church. The church believes the Seven Aphorisms were communicated via telepathy from divine beings to the church’s founder, Corky Ra, sometime around 1975.
Speaking of the Ten Commandments and the Seven Aphorisms, Su Menu, the president of the Summum church, told The New York Times, “If you look at them side-by-side, they really are saying similar things.”

Prepare for state funding to dwindle

The state has to balance its budget. We cannot afford the luxury the federal government has — adding numbers to our debt clock when we run out of space to express the depth of our red ink.
It’s going to be a tough year for state employees. Teachers and state workers have enjoyed several years of pay increases and growth, even as the state initiated a hiring freeze last year to accommodate for Jindal’s first attempts to control state spending.

RHS takes high-tech angle in game filming

The Bearcats’ Class 5A Louisiana High School Association program has gone high-tech with its postgame and game-week analysis.
Prior to this season, the Booster Club and Lincoln Parish School Board provided the necessary funds for the team to purchase the $18,000 software program called Webb GAMEDAY.
Considered the “Cadillac” in its field, the program is designed to analyze on-the-field action, evaluate schemes and strategy, scout opponents and peruse techniques used by players and teams during the course of a game night.
If something moves, the Webb GAMEDAY is going to catch it.

Visions for city all have merit

The construction of space for a central hub or rededication of some current space under the city or parish’s control would be necessary. Not only that, the cost of actually operating the service would be large, requiring service rates that many in the community may not appreciate or support.
All being equal, the cost could be spread out over the community, but some are more able to afford that kind of service than others. Still, the concept bears investigation.
The same goes for the idea of adding a bus terminal to the city.

U.S. soldiers help train army

The U.S. policy is to solve Afghan problems with an Afghan solution, and we will help accomplish this by staying in the background to ensure the ANA takes the lead so that the local population will learn to trust and admire the ANA and the Afghan national government. This mission was a Special Forces mission, it is called foreign internal defense, but the Special Forces are very busy going after specific targets so the mission was transferred to the regular Army.
