Big changes on the table

A second proposal, approved by a House committee and headed next for consideration by the whole House, would strip the state ethics board of its power to rule on ethics violations, handing that sword to administrative law judges who don’t work for the board.
Some claim that would destroy the independence and transparency of the board, and supporters say it would make ethics judgments fairer because the judges would not be involved in filing charges or in investigations.

Keep eyes open for growth

Being the center director might make him the slightest bit biased toward telling local media it will be a rousing success. But it was good to hear Spohn be so unflappable and positive anyway, and I believe it, too.
Louisiana Tech is in the perfect possible position available to it. With a list of honors in the “hard sciences” that Spohn spoke about and a blooming research and development arm, the university will likely be a first stop for military contracts.

Parish boys’ squads ranked

Entering a home game on Friday night against Marion High, Grambling High had totaled 115 points to rank 11 points shy of the No. 2 slot currently occupied by Delhi (26-6).
Veteran head coach Michael Lyons, who will be retiring following this season, took his squad to an 8-2 record against District 2-1A opponents last week with a 77-48 victory over parish and league rival Cedar Creek.

Storm darkens downtown area

Caraway said the weather took down a steam plant substation and caused two circuits to go out, as well as the loss of a transmission line. He said the affected area was the south side of Ruston.
James Brown with Ruston Light and Power said approximately 2,000 customers in downtown Ruston and south of U.S. 167 were affected by the power outage.
Ross said severe weather was also reported in Shreveport, Bossier Parish, Coushatta and Natchitoches.
Power was restored at approximately 10:40 a.m.
