Jayhawks stop Memphis for title

Chalmers’ game-saving 3 came after Memphis missed four of five free throws that would have put the game and the title out of reach. It completed a comeback from nine points down with 2:12 left.
“It’ll probably be the biggest shot ever made in Kansas history,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.
The ending made a mockery of Memphis coach John Calipari’s theory that his players, one of the country’s worst with 59 percent free-throw shooting, didn’t have to be good because they would always come through when the stakes were highest.

Reach out to teens to keep them safe

As teens plan parties and graduation trips during these next few months, they need to realize what could happen if they drink and drive.
Friends and parents helping to throw parties or organize trips must not provide alcohol to anyone younger than 21.
It’s not just the law; it’s the responsible thing to do.
In Lincoln Parish, North Central Alliance Partners in Prevention volunteers will administer Breathalyzer tests to Ruston High School prom-goers Saturday.

Race ahead of cancer

My natural father, someone I never actually met, died of cancer when I was young. My maternal grandmother had cancer before I was born. It would be wrong to say that neither of these affected me, but I was never there to witness their treatments and lives with cancer. All of my encounters with cancer were outside my reach, but still each time a medical questionnaire asked if anyone in my family had cancer, I had to check yes.
With raised awareness of cancer, I’ve always feared it was something looming in my future.

GSU art trickles to area children

Donna McGee, art department head at GSU, said she considers this to be a service and a learning project that allows students to gain required professional experience hours.
Student teachers majoring in special education, elementary, English and music education each integrated their specific training into the children’s classes, said Gloria Rabon, department of education head at GSU.
