Bearcats dominate soccer team

Runner-up West Monroe provided the offensive Most Valuable Player in junior Juan Torres.
The Bearcats (21-5-2) ruled the district with a perfect 6-0 mark, a two-game advantage over the Rebels (13-7-1, 4-2).
Ruston earned a berth in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state playoffs and defeated New Iberia 3-1 in the first round before being eliminated by Captain Shreve 7-1.

When do we see that stimulus?

From the beginning, our governor has said he is wary of some of the stimulus because of the strings that are attached to it — no money is free. The state has therefore backed away from one pool of capital for extending unemployment benefits for those currently pushed out of work by the depth of our current money problems because of required fundamental changes to the state’s unemployment structure.

Shot requirements for students boosted

Sonja Cardwell, also a nurse in Lincoln Parish schools, said this shot — in addition to at least a dozen already required for entry into pre-k or kindergarten — may protect children from a disease that can in some cases be fatal. In some instances, Cardwell said, chickenpox can lead to more serious conditions, such as Reyes syndrome and encephalitis.
“Statistics show one out of around 1,000 people who get chickenpox will have complications, such as pneumonia or encephalitis,” Cavender said.
