Strong literacy skills are the springboard for communication within our society.
People must have them to read road signs, compare grocery item prices, fill out job applications and vote for president.

Black Friday finishes strong in parish

Black Friday might have had a cool start in Ruston, but overall, area merchants appear to have had a hot day of sales to kick off the start of the Christmas sales season.
While crowds started building at Walmart late Thanksgiving evening in preparation for big sales times that started at midnight and 5 a.m., many locally owned stores didn’t see real big crowds venture out into the early morning’s crisp, cool air.

RFD works shopping center car fire

Shoppers at the I-20 Shopping Center in Ruston had more than just bargains to look at Friday as firefighters from the Ruston Fire Department extinguished a fire than had broken out in the engine compartment of a car parked near Old Mexico Restaurant. The fire was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported.

Freshmen to see standardized tests revamped

Clint Ewing and Taylor Terrasas drove in two runs apiece and Josh Barrett tossed six solid innings, as the Blue Team upended the White Team 8-2 in game No. 7 to clinch the recent 2010 Louisiana Tech Fall World held at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

Tech hoopsters lose

It was a tough weekend for Louisiana Tech University basketball teams, as the Bulldogs lost 74-65 at the Universty of Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday night and the Lady Techsters fell to Missouri State 62-53 on Saturday afternoon.
