At least it did for hundreds of local residents who showed up at the Ruston Civic Center on the evening of Nov. 17.

Area prepares for Black Friday

Area merchants are gearing up — the countdown to Black Friday is on.
Thousands of area shoppers are expected to join millions nationwide on Friday descending on stores before dawn to take advantage of some of the best deals of the year.
The Black Friday promotional blitz — the traditional start of the holiday season — gets its name because it traditionally was the day when huge crowds would push stores into “the black” profit-wise.
Richie McKinney, owner of McKinney Honda, said he expects a big day.

Student group designs New Tech T-shirt

All New Tech @ Ruston students recently received T-shirts that featured the winning design from the "Get Real" project earlier in the year. Student groups were challenged to create original designs that reflected what New Tech meant to them. Graphic design students from Louisiana Tech University judged.

Hico Elementary hosts flag ceremony

Hico Elementary 4-H Club hosted a flag ceremony in honor of the men and women who have fought and are still fighting for the country’s freedom. This ceremony, held on Nov. 11, included the presentation and raising of a new American flag, donated by Rod Ebyer, a veteran of the United States armed forces. Students, teachers and honored guests attended.

Bayou Classic always the game of the year for GSU

If it’s Thanksgiving week, then it must mean it’s time for one of college football’s biggest rivalries and most exciting weekends.
It’s the annual “Bayou Classic,” set for another edition on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.
Mention this time of the year to followers of the Tigers and Jaguars and they know very well what is at stake whenever their teams meet on the Louisiana Superdome turf.
More than the final regular season contest for both schools, it is a time when the unofficial bragging rights for the state are determined.

Area has much to celebrate this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving began in 1621 as a way to celebrate an abundant fall harvest. The American settlers had the right idea. Although they faced many challenges while colonizing the wild woodlands of America, they found things for which to be grateful. This is the kind of attitude people today would do well to have.

Lions Club donates items for blind students

At a recent meeting of the Ruston Lions Club, Lincoln Parish teacher Janet Hammock is shown receiving one of five Perkins Braillers from Lions President Charles Edwards. The braillers will be used by blind Lincoln Parish students who are studying Braille. The purchase of the five machines by the Lions Club was made possible with funds generated from a chicken barbecue sale. Also pictured, center, is Lions Secretary Ray Osborne.
